battery cooling fan mod

I never seen this sensor on my 2004 and 2008, nor that I remember seeing wiring leading to an internal sensor in that particular areas.
Can you post a picture of it?

 

Same temperature for the fan start (via Torque PRO) with the same Prius gen3 battery on Auris HSD, but placed right under the rear passenger's buttocks...

 

I know this is an old post but down here the problem remains unsolved.
The heat is a big problem for the batteries, and getting short life spans for the HV Battery is common.

It would be possible to reprogram de computer in a Prius Gen II or Gen III to do all of it's cooling functions just moving the fan starting parameters about 5° Cs than the regular setting? ... I guess it would mean a decrease of fan life span... but as it is Im getting battery problems in all Prius in the fleet (10 of them) just before hitting the 200,000 kms mark... because of the extreme heat here.
I'd rather less fan life and larger HV battery lifespan.

Are you doing the minimum to keep the battery cool? Always have ac on and ac is consistently maintained by cleaning condenser coil in front of rad? Car has really dark tint job? And there's a hatch cover over the the back hatch area that covers the hybrid battery area. I use a piece of foam insulation covered in aluminium foil to reflect sunlight that is strapped to the extendable hatch cover. Direct sunlight does not pound the back battery are all day.

And lastly the car does not sit for longer that 2 minutes without a WeatherTech window shield. If the heat is eating up your hybrid battery's my guess is your letting the cabin get consistently very hot. No windshield shade when sitting. That shield does an amazing job. Its custom fitted and insulated. Not like the shields you buy at a parts store there pretty worthless. If I go into a store for 5 minutes I put the shield up. The Prius windshield has a huge crossection. My shield is 10 years old still pretty good.

I know all these little things really help because I'm on my original battery and after a very mild rejuv from prolong the battery is running great. And it very very hot here too.

I put thermometer on the dash board of my G2 the other day and did not put my weathertech shade in the window and after about 15 minutes in the sun it read 160 degrees's F.

There's 2 things I buy immediately when i get a new car. The Weathertech and Wheelskins for the steering wheel. Both are awesome products. Both lasting 10 years so far.

Throw some wheelskins on the wheels your drivers will love them. G2 steering wheel is like a cheese grater. Ever notice all the white dust on the dash of a G2? Thats skin from your hands getting cheese grated on the steering wheel.

 

The HV fan funnels air to the bottom of the pack and allows the air to flow to the top and out through the outlet duct. But there is no fan to assist in "ejecting" hot air out. So in theory a mod that could help would be to have fan blowers eject hot air out from top of the pack. This could ease the work of the main HV fan. Any mod around the HV pack requires extreme caution. It may not even have to be in the HV pack but somewhere near the exit duct. It would have to also be in a way that would not obstruct the flow of the HV air circulation should the fan mod fail to operate.

The cold are blowing in ejects the hot air. It's doesn't need any assistance. The air just continues no matter what the temperature.
If it didn't blow it out, it would just be a compressor.

I was planning to do a mod for this. If you look at the gap between each battery. It's tiny. So having another fan to help remove hot air should improve air flow. But I'm not sure if it will lower battery temp and by how much. The common battery death seems to start in the middle. So increasing efficient air flow can help extend battery life especially for the middle section. I'm using Dr. Prius to monitor battery temps.

 

Just set the fan to run on HI the whole time.

I bet you could easily implement this mod, and you can power that silent fan (hopefully silent) directly from the auxiliary battery I bet... even if that would mean shorter life for the auxiliary battery, I think it would be worth it.

Only that this mod it would need to be paired with the reprogramming of the main HV fan so it will start running at lower temperatures and the whole rutine adjusted so it runs at maximum power also at lower temps. - Then, and only then, I bet this mod would really be helping... otherwise your mod would just be taking part of the load of work and the self-adjusting system will be removing that load from the main hv fan.

The kick will be in the tweaking of the self-adjusting software that runs that HV fan.

Any one know the pinout and way to control the fan speed, I saw this other post that confirmed the pins and suggest connected in line #2 to #3 (ground) to get the fan to turn on. But nothing about how to control the speed other than manually doing via a power supply amps.
