I did a long drive on 08 SEP 18 and first heard it when I had my passenger talking to me while the radio was playing. I originally thought it was the radio so I shut it off to to hear my passenger and continued to hear the noise. I originally heard it when I was going over 35MPH and figured it was just "switching gears." Then I continued to hear the noise when I was at a red light. It sounded a little familiar to me, like it was a computer part and it sort of reminds me of the sound below:

I do not know if it is that exact sound as I am not in the car right now and don't have a recording of my car. At worst, it may sound like the video below:

The noise is not constant and I can't seem to find a pattern. I heard it again today and am not certain if I should be alarmed. Any ideas?

Also, the car has 13400 miles on it. According to the carfax, it had regular maintenance on it if that helps solve this issue.

Hmm, hard to say what that may be. Being only intermittent, it's pretty much guaranteed if you took it into the dealership that they wouldn't be able to "duplicate customers concern". Maybe try to get a recording of it on your cellphone and re-post here? Might also check the air intake for the High Voltage battery which is under the backseat of your car. The intake for that is on drivers side, lower panel of the rear seat. I suppose it's possible there could be a leaf in that fan... Who knows, anything is possible. :)

btw, that air intake for your high voltage battery is something you want to keep an eye on. Periodically check to make sure that filter screen is clean. It's easy to do.

13400 miles means still under warranty, right?

That is absolutely correct, I already know they will say that they do not see any issue based on my previous experience with them we I bought the car. I'd probably have to go elsewhere. My phone does not have a native video camera, do you have a recommended app for android phone to record something like this with?

Yes, I get one year dealership warranty and it is still under toyota's warranty for 4 years and up to 75000 (I think that is the number) miles.

I have not, I've been driving with the phone ready to record but haven't heard the noise last consistently to record it.

Then it seems like you've found the solution. Always have your phone ready and the issue will never recur. :D

Unfortunately, virtually impossible to know given information available.
My only advice would be to at least establish with your dealership-or "a" dealership that you believe it's a problem and issue. Then just be ready to record when and if it manifests again.

Maybe finding a dealership you feel better about, and maybe finding one willing to be more aggressive in helping you track down the issue. But I'm afraid your going to have to wait until you can get more tangible evidence. Either it happening more often or an actual recording, or both.

In ANY service departments defense, it is difficult to track something like this down, if a customer is saying it makes this sound, but is at the moment NOT making that sound.

You say it sounds "like" these other sounds. Any idea of direction or source area of the sounds? Where it seems to be emanating might go a long way in ruling out what it is NOT. No use it hunting down areas behind you....if the sound is coming from in front of you..or vice versa.

    Good Luck.

Here is one recording of it that you can definitely hear it.

Turn up your sound some. It sounds like it is coming from in front of you when driving.

Going by location, about the only thing I can think of is the auto HVAC system. Try changing modes or putting it under load to see if that gets it clicking.

There are small electric servomotors which actuate linkages to move the air blend doors in the system. This is how it directs flow between feet, face & defog. Another mixes air-conditioned air with heated air to hit the temp setting.

If one of the linkages is getting stuck, the motor can fight it causing a repeated clicking.

I tried putting it on max for a bit and increasing the temperature, I did not hear any clicking going off. On my way home tonight, I shut off the AC system and still heard the clicking noise a bit when I was driving about 25mph or less.

So, after some testing while driving I realized that the clicking typically starts when the speed is near 30mph. The sound seems to come from accelerating; when I am accelerating between ECO and PWR, I can hear the clicking. I tested tapping the gas and noticed that when I hit that area between ECO and PWR, it start clicking, when I take it off, it stopped.

However, this doesn't mean that the noise always stops, I've heard it when I was at a red light before. Side note, if I took the vehicle to a toyota facility to have it looked at, do I get charged for it despite it being under warranty for the next few years + the dealership 1yr warranty? Do I have to go specifically to that dealership's facility or can I go to any?

Side note, after taking a short drive, shutting off the car and opening the front hood, I could hear something still working underneath the hood. Is that normal?

You'll have to read the fine print on your paperwork. Which warranty and who underwrote it? Certain parts may still be covered under one of the original warranties- that's good at all Toyota dealers nationwide. Other parts would only be covered under the used car warranty you bought with the car from the selling dealer, and claims could only be made to them directly.

These cars are heavily computer-controlled and they will perform certain operations without your involvement, particularly relating to evaporative emissions management. It is normal for the car to make operational noises after you've shut down and departed. Eventually you'll pick up the pattern and stop noticing it.
