Don't complain about oil changes

    Was the back end disassemble for the oil change, or just for the #*@! air filters? I have to watch that again.

    It's not really clear. The text of the web page infers you need to remove all the fairings at the back in order to top up the oil??? :confused:(n)

    Refilling, along with checking air filters and all that good stuff, requires removing the car's rear fender liners and rear deck.

    I guess it's inevitable: a car like that is the least likely prospect for a low budget DIY'r, and the owner's have deep pockets, so easy-of-maintenance falls by the wayside.

    Do any of you know anyone that owns a Bugatti? I've worked for a guy that does. People that buy that type of car, and they usually have more than one(1) car in that $$$ range, never really drive the car long enough to ever need an oil change. It's a "trophy car".

    My employer. But he prefers driving the steam engine or the bio fuel car.

    Well sooner or later we will have lifetime oil installed! No oil changes for the life of the car and it’s sealed too! SMH :)

    There seem to be fewer and fewer dipstick on some cars. Automatic transmissions come to mind.
    Electric steering eliminated power steering.

    Oil needs to be changed on a time basis as well as a miles driven basis. Especially if driven infrequently and on short trips. Water forms acids which eat bearings. My high end cars required annual oil changes even if driven only 200 miles a year.

    Prius also specifies annual if you don't get enough miles first. Or was it six months? Yeah, it's 6 months on the Gen 2.

    Honda says per the in-dash Maintenance Minder, OR yearly, whichever comes first.

    I suppose air-cooled engines in general have shorter oil-change intervals because of wider engine-block temperature swings.

    Was oil even as effective back then? Only owned 3 air cooled cars. VW, VW, Porsche with VW engine. Never kept them long enough to test the effect of oil on their longevity. Only engine I ever had fail was Mitsubishi water cooled around 100k in the '80's era.

    No, motor oil of 50ish years ago was not great. Also engine manufacturing tolerances were much wider, so they would self-grind more metal into the sauce.

    Improvements in both have lengthened oil-change intervals. But let's not go nuts: Age of lifetime engine lube is not here yet.

    Prius with synthetic oil can go >10,000 miles with very benign post-hoc oil chemical analyses (I was one of those risk takers). Perhaps work well until the pH buffers are used up. In extremis it is oil filter that has shorter effective life. It is collecting ingested particles that got past the (initial) air filter.

    Driving unpaved roads in preceding car's dust cloud I would let off accel pedal, so engine would stop inhaling. Ah, memories...

    Funny thing is, the whole manual comes in under 100 pages, includes little details like checking the valve clearance, all the fluid drain instructions, everything.

    The pricing on a tire change is similar. You have to send the wheels in to Bugatti and they are changed at the factory. Every 4th tire change, the wheels must be replaced.

    Servicability is also scarified due to packaging requirements. It's the same story as the old Ferraris like the 355, which required engine-out for a large amount of service.

    Is he the one that owns the red-and-black one that shows up at Supercar Saturdays? Gold Cost Bentley on Rush has a Veyron all the time in that corner spot.

    I actually just ran a Blackstone used oil analysis on Mobil 1 out of a sports car that sat with the same oil in it (driven like 5 miles) for 3 years and wasn't honestly started all that often. Blackstone says that the oil is in pretty good condition and the additive package still held up. We were super worried about it until we got the report.
