It pays to read the owner's manual. ;) Also, the mechanical key will unlock all the doors by turning it twice in succession, quickly. Providing of course the door lock is operating correctly.

Thanks! I'll try that after I finish work today. I even asked the guys at Toyota about the doors remaining locked, and they said the same thing I thought!

I think - ?? - maybe you can get the "unlock single door" to be changed to "unlock all doors". Personally, I had my previous 2 cars changed TO "unlock ONLY Driver's Door" for my own security. I got used to pressing the button on the FOB twice if I had a passenger.

For some strange reason - Australian TOYOTAs don't have that facility to unlock ONLY ONE Door. Grrrr!!

It's fine. I know how to open all the door know so all is good!

Maybe this is good omen for the dealership to actually fix my car :)

Small update. Took my car to another dealership today and they refused service on me. Said since I told them work was done at another dealership that they won't work on my car and I should go back to them.

Service guy instead gave me phone number of I what I believe was some Toyota headquarters and I spoke to a rep who opened up a case number for me since I have taken it in already and the issue is not resolved and assigned my case to a specific person who will be calling on Monday. I mentioned the fix it right the first time and he knew about that. He pulled up my info and I'm still under warranty. I will find it Monday what they plan to do next.

    I will keep you updated!

Ok someone from service management called me today from the original dealership that Has been working in the car.

Gave me his personal cell number and said he wanted me to bring the car in and show them the videos and try to rectify the situation. So the headquarters reached out to upper service management apparently. He's off work for the next two days, so I'll bring my car on Thursday afternoon. Again, I'll keep you posted.

Update: So, car was sent to same dealership that I have been using in the past. Repair guy called today said my videos were sent to headquarters and they couldn't duplicate what was happening to me in the shop. No surprise since it happens usually only once a month. So they have no clue what's going on.

Headquarters wants repair guy to show me how to open the door tomorrow. They said I need to wait two seconds after I hear the click to open the door. They thought it might be that I'm being too impatient when I open the door and am inadvertently locking it. Yes I was very impatient in the videos, because this has been happening for 18 months now.

They said in the video that they only saw me trying to open the door, and not walk to the door to open it. I think implying that they can't see if I'm just grabbing the door or being impatient and that I'm locking it from human error.

They said, if after being taught how to open my Prius, and it happens again, they will go to the next step which I think is doing something big. Sorry, I'll update tomorrow, can't remember what technician said.

I have decided to video tape EVERY time I open my door as I walk up to it now saying the date as well as being calm as can be when opening it. The symptom changed after they reprogrammed the smart key last week There was NO click last week when I tried to open the door, the door didn't open at all. I had to use my manual key. Before, it was always the door opening even though It was very slight. Also three times in the last month, the door opens but has a bit of a hiccup before fully opening. That also never happened before they reprogrammed last month.

IIRC you can program the timing between locking and unlocking the door but I'm not sure if it works the other way round, unlock to lock.
If they say that you're accidentally locking it before you've opened it then it may be the timing is too short.

Yep - I suspect TOYOTA are clutching at straws. If you reach for the handle and try to pull it open at the moment immediately - lightning fast - it occasionally doesn't open, trying to rip your arm off with the unexpected "still locked", but you just automatically reach for it again and it works normally, which I'm sure @ayagirl is doing - judging from the videos.

But - let them try it their way - and if unsuccessful, sounds like TOYOTA will fix it properly.

this may be the problem, but it shouldn't open at all if not completely unlocked. maybe the motor is binding

tbh, looking at the first video again in post #15, i can't tell if the door is really moving. it looks like it, but the camera is changing angles, so the seam appears wider. but it looks like you haven't pulled the handle yet?
it's all too jumbled to be sure.

Mechanic today said if it happens again they want to remove or replace my remote car starter that Toyota installed two months after I got the car. I had a problem with it about 7 months ago. My car lights wouldn't turn off at all even with the engine off until they figured it was a wire from the remote starter pressing on something that was making the car think I was going to start it. I lost three quarters of a tank of gas till they figured out that problem.

Mechanic said the next step would be the look at the actuator, it costs $300 and Toyota wanted to wait until they tried to see if the remote starter could be the problem. They obviously don't want to spend any money trying to figure it out until they have to. I was NOT happy about that. The mechanic agreed we would speak to the manager and do BOTH at the same time.

Also I was asked to video tape next time it happens clearly showing me holding the fob key in one hand and opening the door with the other. And to step back from the car if after the two beeps it doesn't open. And slowly repeat if it still doesn't open and wait two seconds after beeps to open the door at all times.

Thinking about it I am annoyed by what went on today. I always try to be accommodating but
the videos they saw clearly show me holding the smart key and waiting several seconds between trying to open the door.. my hand is nowhere near the lock on the door. Even the mechanic apologized that he felt bad implying it might be human error in my part..

In the last video , the reflection from the car shows me holding it. Yes I am impatient amd moving the camera but I also needed to get to my work and this has happened so many times at this pt I was frustrated.

I should.have spoke to the manager and asked him who made this decision about this but I thought I should try to follow what they said. Sorry for blowing off steam but they dont even want to look at the actuator as the next step as I stated before.

I know the toyota headquarters rep will be calling me Monday and I will kindly point out my frustration about this.

I am also going through a kitchen reno where the the project manager tried to get me to pay more $ in a rather dishonest way. Both happened today and it just made me upset. Anyway thanks for listening....lol
