Photo says it all, except for the detail that the driver who hit me spun around in the middle of the street and took off before I could see a plate number. The car drives - I was able to get it home with the rear-hatch warning beeping the whole way, so I expect the battery is still fine. I have uninsured motorist coverage, but I'm worried that if this is a total loss, insurance won't pay for the replacement cost of a new car since its blue-book value will be substantially less even when purchased this recently. Any idea what sort of repair bill this might come to?

It will be a lot. I don't think they will make it a total loss, but that's bad. So sorry.

I am sorry about the accident. The driver must have been hi on drug or something to be running off without stopping. What did police say? Any chance of catching the perpetrator? Hope things works out for you with the insurance. I am so sorry.

There is quite a bit of damage, but it is repairable and not really that bad. Any airbags deploy? It looks like the inner bumper did its job and took a lot of the force by collapsing.

Battery may have damage. The shock alone may have shortened it life.

Today it makes sense to have a dash cam.

Tired of these hit and run stories

Sorry and good luck. My last two Prius hit deer and thankfully they died. No good meat left from the impacts. City deer are the worst! But they usually don't hit and run. They drop.

I got rear ended by a hit n run in 2009 in a gen 2 Prius, but an alert UPS driver snagged the plate and cops got him.

It was a tap, and insurance covered a 2k bill.

    Yours looks like 15 - 20k....

Sorry, and good luck with repairs.

    Bill

I've been told the police found the car, but the driver had abandoned it. They apparently hit *another* car while fleeing as well, and the police found an open container (didn't elaborate) in the car. So we've got two leaving-scene-of-the-accident charges and most likely a DUI awaiting the driver should they locate them.

Waiting for the adjuster to call today to figure out where I can take the thing.

There seems to be a lot more of this happening the past few years. Among those who get caught, a very common theme is that they have outstanding warrants or priors or illegal status.

Pretty much off-topic, but one thing that stands out for me in the picture is the lack of license plate, I don't understand this: the US is supposedly the bastion of tight security, but new vehicles routinely roll off the lot sans license plates, and continue thus for at least a month, or more?

Here in Virginia, the dealer has a computer connection to the DMV (department of motor vehicles) and prints a temporary 30 day license plate that includes the VIN and dealer name. The permanent license plate usually arrive within that time period.

You can test drive a car with temporary dealer license plates though.

    Temp tags are employed;).

It’s a piece of paper that the dealer will affix to the backside of the windshield. This is until the permanent tags arrive, which is usually within a month.

Down below the 49th parallel the DMV is not the best government run agency :(.

It's not clear in the picture, but there's a paper temporary tag taped up in the back window on the left.

Our temporary tags mount where the license plates fasten. They are more like cardboard rather than paper.

This is his Washington State temp plate, paper with a bold pre-printed state number, taped inside the rear glass:

Expiration normally 45 days after purchase, but most recently I got my permanent plate in about two weeks.

Any chance of a camera in the area. A store near by? People have no respect anymore. 2 weeks...the new car smell has not even worn off by then. I am impressed the back glass held up. Hope it works out for you but it looks like a long road and a lot of phone calls ahead for you.

Please keep us posted along the way.

I should have added that when we see a car without even a temporary plate, it is most likely (1) illegal, or (2) new car visiting from California. But enforcement of many issues is weak.

Since you car was still drivable. Why didn't you give chase to the perp? Call 9/11 while in pursuit of the other driver? Normally I wouldn't say this but it's a brand new car. Things like gap insurance come into play. That is rough with a brand new car.

That instantly adds substantial risk that most people don't want to take on, for good reason. The wisdom of such responses is very highly dependent on the particular circumstances, and those often do not align favorably.

I did it once when an incident happened on a major bicycle event I was supporting, but would never question anyone for declining to do so.

What a mess. I hope the police catch the guy/girl and make pay for the damages caused.
