Key Debacle

    Hello All,

    I'm sure my questions have been answered in other threads but I can't seem to find the specific issue I have.

    I recently purchased a new key fob housing and another used key fob for my 2004 gen. 2 prius with the sks system.

    I'm realizing now that purchasing the used key fob was not a bright idea after reading the forums on this site, however, I was ignorant until now. That being said here is my situation ...

    I took my key (which was fully functional but very beat up) my new fob housing, and my purchased used backup key to a locksmith down the street from me, (I have used these guys in the past with no problems)

    Here is what happened ... They were only able to program the new (used) fob to start/stop the car using the slot none of the buttons on it work and the sks system doesn't work. Secondly, after they transferred the guts of my old fully functional key into the new housing, only the SKS system works on that key and the key doesn't work in the slot. lol!

    So now I have one fob that works with SKS but doesn't work in the slot, and a backup fob that only works in the slot!

    So here are my questions ...

    1. is there anything I can do to regain the slot functionality of my key that works with SKS?

    2. If I try the chicken dance on my used key that I purchased from ebay do I stand a chance of losing functionality of my current key and being left with no working keys?

    Your locksmith screwed something up and they should know better... Pressure them to fix it or have them find an electronic locksmith with access to Toyota Techstream software's security feature, a monthly fee-based service to wipe and reseed the system to restore both FOBs to full functionality.

    As for chicken dance with a FOB that's already programmed for a different vehicle... I made this mistake back in 2012 when I first got my '07 and lost the ability to start car without plugging the FOB into the slot, so I'd recommend against doing that...

    Doesn’t the fob have some little pill in it that the key slot needs to start up he car? Did they change that?

    The second picture shows the black chip that must be transferred along with the circuit board to a new case for it to work in the slot. It sounds like your locksmith missed it. Hopefully the old case is still around so the chip can still be retrieved and transferred.

    Yes that’s the thing I was thinking of. My advice would be to get 1 key fob working correctly 100%, buy a new never used key fob from somewhere, do the chicken dance with it. Then take the old parts that don’t work and throw them away before they cause any more trouble. You should always have 2 key fobs, just in case.
