I think my response was well thought out. Keeping a safe distance while local law enforcement can locate the Prius driver and the driver who rear ended his brand new Prius Prime. If it wasn't brand new I would not give that advice.

That does look expensive! I hope they catch the guy. But just for perspective, that was a love tap compared to ours. ;)

Well, given the driver ditched the car a few blocks away and fled on foot (and the cops found an open container inside), I'm guessing that they probably aren't the kind of person would have been able to safely confront myself. I'd rather lose money on a car wreck than risk the kind of injuries that going cowboy might have given me.

Like but unlike. Assuming that was a total loss?

Yes it was a total. 1st responders were surprised to find us alive. We were going zero. Texter was going 60 in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee battering ram. The Prius is AMAZING!

Either way, it's a heck of a trauma and I feel for ya. Hope you can get everything resolved without adding financial trauma to the mix.

hope they get them and it wasn't a stolen car to begin with. With any he'll have insurance and you can sue him for your loss. That said, all the sensors on the bumper aren't cheap, and I have no idea how much fixing the hatch (if it's fixable) will be... finding someone to do carbon fiber work is going to be next to impossible. I was told that a replacement hatch is something on the order of $15K and that a hit good enough to damage it pretty much totals the car.

    best of luck

I just got the estimate from the body shop; it comes to just under $15K total. The battery is intact. The rear hatch is $3,500 of that. Insurance is "running the numbers" but I don't think that's enough to make it a total loss, unless the rest of the car's salvage value is substantial - to be sure, everything from the battery forward is near-new, so you never know. They're estimating about 3 weeks repair time.

No word on locating the hit-and-run driver, but the other car was not reported stolen, so I expect my insurance to go after the owner of that car.

Now to read up on diminished value claims...

Look closely. The temporary plate is in the back window.

Also the result of an uninsured 2000 Jeep battering ram... I was going 45 mph it was going 60 mph. Sonny definitely saved my life! Screenshot_20181021-101418.jpeg

Wow! How fast do you think the other person was going? I'm friends with the owner of Burien Toyota. Where did the accident take place? I too live in Seattle south of the dealership. Thanks.

This happened northside, on Aurora Avenue near Greenwood - I stopped at a light and the driver behind me...didn't. It's not a high-speed road, especially with traffic, so I'm guessing he was doing 25-30 at collision time - I don't even think he hit his brakes. Pushed me into the intersection, so I pulled forward once I realize I could still move to avoid getting hit again. Looked behind me, expecting the other car to pull over as well, only to see the car making a U-turn in the middle of the road and heading off in the other direction...probably with bits of my car stuck in his grill :)

I'm supposed to get the car back Friday, and we'll see how "good as new" it is then.

I'm curious - would the dealership be able to do an appraise post-repair? I need to gather data for a diminished value claim once I get the car back.

That just doesn't seem to be one of SPD's priorities.

Regionally, fatal and injury hit-and-runs seem to be on the rise. Or local news is publicizing them more.

Damn what a ride. That's great that it wasn't a write-off. I know in this case it might not have helped but I can't figure out why only some people have dashcams in their cars. I have one in the front *and* back and still consider that's not enough. I mean they take zero maintenance and can save you in a pinch.

Just to update - I still don't have the car back, almost a month later. The body work was done last Friday, but the replacement ICS sensors aren't being recognized. The body shop took it to a dealership, assuming a software issue; the dealership reported that the collision somehow "fried" the main ICS computer module (which isn't anywhere near the rear of the car - they're speculating some sort of high-voltage event triggered by the crash somehow).

To add to the fun, that module is apparently very hard to find - they told me there were two in the US at the time - and is considered a hazardous material by Toyota, so they won't ship it by air. So it's on a truck coming up to Washington from California, and assuming no more shenanigans, it will arrive sometime next week. Once that's installed, we cross our fingers that nothing else comes up then.

All in all, this is shaping up to be something close to a $20K repair on a ~$30K car. I'm waiting for them to say "never mind, we'll just total it" but I guess they're too far invested to change course now. Can't wait to see what the appraiser says after I get the car back, though.

When mine got hit, the initial appraisal was $3500... ended up being around $15K when all said an done.

I think the appraisers lowball to suck in the insurance companies so they get "invested" in the repair and just keep throwing more money towards a car that should have been totaled. Some states have a 50% cap on value so if the repair is more they're supposed to total it... but if they lowball the initial estimate? Not sure how that all works.

I doubt insurance company won't pay in full since it is only 2 weeks old. And you may be able to claim the rebate twice.

But from picture, it would be fixed instead of totaled.

I have the F770 front & rear dash cam and the quality isn't that great to get plates. I'll have to take a look today.
