Where / How do you store your Charging Cable?

    So I picked up my 2018 Prius Prime last night. This morning, I just opened the trunk and tossed the charger in.

    But it sparked a thought. Where/how do you guys store the cable? I do plan on purchasing a home charging station. (My plug is behind bushes, and that got old REAL fast last night in the dark)

    But I will be using the L1 charger at work most likely.

    As you lift the hatch look just forward of the latch . A panel is there that you remove and that’s where you store it.

    I took a seat off a tall bar stool and am using the stand. I hooked a hook to it and keep the charge cord there. When it is plugged in the device sits on top of the seat stand just right to plug in and rest on it. Works great.

    Well maybe I misunderstood. When I used the cord a lot, as in at home and at work. I'd just toss it in the trunk. But now that I have access to L2 chargers at work and home, I just keep it stored in it's storage bin (like I described above).

    I actually had to use it at a ChargePoint spot that the L2 was broken. It allowed me to plug into it with my charger cable and locked the plug behind a door. I just used my lock button on my car to secure the other end. Worked like a charm and didn't cost that much to do. So it's nice to have it around for "emergencies". ( Since i was going to the movies and wasn't down completely the longer charge worked out perfectly)

    I find that little narrow compartment a pain and somewhat time consuming to get the charging cord in and out, so we just keep ours in a heavy duty synthetic shopping bag. The bag also works well to keep the elements off the charging mechanism when being used outside.

    An L2 charging station at home is money wasted for most of us. You can change your landscaping for a lot less. I figure about 25-30 miles on a charge. That saves roughly a half-gallon of gasoline. That's worth...buck seventy-five or so. Getting that buck-six bits savings in half the time never pays off.

    The OEM level 1 charger remains in the hatch, where it was meant to be stored. Our other charger, a level 2 EVSA with level 1 adapter when needed, remains in the garage.

    Partially. I think "money wasted" and "not cost effective" are not the same thing. Sure, for many folks, the financial payback for the cost of getting and installing L2 charging at home would take several years. But there are other considerations, too, at least for some people. Some people can benefit from a full charge in 2 hours instead of 5, if they make enough multiple trips over the course of a day. And if those people are on green power and eliminating emissions is important to them, then any chance to turn gas-burning travel into green EV travel is worth something for their personal values.

    It also depends on the relative cost of electricity and gasoline. Where I am, electricity is relatively cheap and gasoline is a little above the US national average. In that environment it's easier to justify the expense of an L2 charging station at home. Where I used to live in Texas, with relatively cheap gas and average to slightly above average electric costs, it's harder to justify from a purely economic standpoint.

    I see your points. But you have to realize everyone's situation is different.

    For me, the only outlet I can plug my Prius in, requires that I park my car on the lawn. This is not acceptable long term. I'm going to have to put in an outlet near where I park my cars. If I'm doing that, it's trivial in cost to upsize to 240 volts. (Actually cheaper, since I already have an unused 40 Amp outlet in my basement that can be repurposed.)

    Convenience also plays a part in this. If I had a permanently mounted charging station, I'm much more likely to plug in, in all weather conditions. This is the value to me.

    What you need to do is get it wrapped up just right and then secure it with a velcro tie. I can put mine into the compartment in a few seconds that way but there is a bit of a trick to it.

    Yes, but you'll still have to buy a charger for that 240V outlet, which costs between $150 (if ordered from China) and $550, depending on the model while the 120V one comes with the car and is thus no extra cost. It would take a really long time for that 240V charger to be worth the money it costs unless you charge at home several times every day.

    Same here out of convenience. I plug in each day at the office and it was cumbersome accessing the storage lid from below the rubber mat. The cable storage space is always there when I need room in the hatch for something large and don't want anything sitting on top of the cable.

    I store mine on the garage wall plugged in. If I want to charge while I’m out I’ll just find a L2 charger. I do the same with my BEV’s level 1 charger.
