I'm highly sensitive to poisonous car exhaust smells and am 100% certain that when outside air is on I smell car exhaust and when I use recirculate with a carbon filter the car exhaust smells dissipate quickly... Also I regularly drive 700+ miles one way to visit family. In my old car without a cabin air filter I'd always arrive wiped out for 12 to 24 hours. But soon as I got a Prius with Charcoal activated cabin filter and kept it on recirculate, not only was I finally able to make the drive in one 13 hours session, but I'd also arrive feeling great and not wiped out for a day.

And if what you say is true about outside air at 20% when on recirculate, I'd like to mod the air intake to get it down to less than 5%...

Seriously, there's so many people that are slowly killing themselves because when they smell deadly car exhaust they don't breath out and wait to breathe until they found cleaner air. And as a kid growing up in the 70's I remember how bad the air really got before what little emissions controls we currently have. So if you want to make excuses about all the poison you breathe, that has more to do with you being in denial about poison in the air you breathe, not me being overly sensitive.

Found the charcoal filter on eBay.

Check out this smog. LA area beach. Our polution regulations don't help much at all. LA is in the top five most polluted cities in US.

The system is designed to prevent stuff like exhaust gasses from accumulating inside the car. I think you would be foolish to modify it.

And then......you don't KNOW that it is exhaust "fumes" that bother you. It might be pollen, it might be rubber dust, it might be brake dust, it might be the chemicals used to make YOUR OWN CAR'S INTERIOR gassing off. Or it might just be the stress of driving or prolonged exposure to sunlight or maybe even dehydration from excessive air flow.

You are twisting what I have said so far into something that I did not even come close to saying.
I am not defending vehicle emissions in any way.
I just think you have jumped to a conclusion that might not be valid.

    I quit.

    FYI:
Got my filter changed today and the air flow seems to be restored.
They said it was clogged with, along with normal dirt, what looked like rodent droppings.
In Florida, it might be bugs instead.
Some of the cockroaches here are as big as mice.

This sounds like a Saturday morning infomercial.

I’ll still be tossing it in the trash. I’ll be dead before I’m 65, so no hope in living longer as you stated in an earlier post. Dementia runs rampant in my family, so I’ll be a dribbling fool soon enough. So no worries about losing any intelligence as you also stated earlier.

If that charcoal filter did anything more than filter farts of mine and my passengers then maybe. But I’ll live with the consequences and will sleep well with that decision.

Lol, you don't even change your own air filter? How can you possibly enjoy participating in a DIY forum like this if you don't even change your own air filter? This pretty much proves our suspicions that you being on here is because you like trolling rather than learning and skill sharing...

    You need an ego adjustment.
Not everybody does things like YOU do.

And because they have a slightly different attitude about "stuff" proves NOTHING.

Just for the record, I started rebuilding engines about 1958 when I helped my Dad do a two cylinder John Deere.

I am unable and unwilling to do much of that kind of stuff these days and can afford to have someone else do it.

    Your conclusion is totally invalid.
Maybe that proves something about YOU.

Give it a rest. Throwing around personal insults is just another form of trolling.

I work on my 1966 Chevelle. I don't change my cabin air filter on my PC. Just wanted to throw out information for statistical purposes.

Changing your cabin air filter is near the same difficulty level as opening your glove box, it takes 60 seconds... The fact that you're unable to do that yourself, but yet you always insist on butting in and discouraging people learning how to rebuild hybrid batteries or doing complex diagnosis with claims that they're wasting their time and its time to get a new car makes me question what your true motivation is for participating on PriusChat?

Unlike you, I'm not on here to "PROVE" anything. I'm on here to help people fix their Prius so they can save money. I very much enjoy knowing that I helped someone solve a problem without it costing them a fortune for a mechanic.

And if you think I somehow magically forgot all the times you've been dismissive, negative or downright rude to people I've been trying to help on the day you finally admit that you're so incompetent with car repairs that you don't even know how to change your own cabin air filter, you got another thing coming...

Mostly I'm just grateful that you revealed who you really are and what skill set you bring to this forum. I'll make sure to mention that next time you start trolling someone who's stressed out because their only vehicle has broken down on them.

    WOW!

I'm in Smogville USA! I just blew 50 bucks on 2 charcoal cabin filters. I've been wanting to try one. See if I notice any difference. And I had to watch a YouTube video to find out how to put it in! :D :ROFLMAO:

My Gen4 Prius uses the same cabin filter as 11 other Toyota/Lexus models. And my engine air filter is the same as a Prius C.

Back to the YouTube teaching. ;)

Never said that. Never even hinted that I wasn't able.

Your rant is totally unnecessary and an insult to everyone who is reading it.

Just because your feelings are hurt because I've called you on a few incorrect things in the past is no reason to carry a chip on your shoulder forever.

    Further rants will be ignored.

My feelings aren't hurt, I'm actually really happy to finally see how little you know about what you're talking about. Makes you way easier to ignore.

Children, both of you go to your rooms and think about what you did. You are both looking bad right now. Just stop. Let it go.

It takes longer than 1 second to change a cabin air filter. Not everybody "wants" to do it, just because they can.

Now back to our schedule programming.

Starship, let us know if you see a difference.

Well, keep an eye...or nose on the situation. You are probably aware of the many threads of fellow Prius Owners that have had problems with rodent infestations. There are also a few threads about how to go about attempting to make your vehicle a little more rodent proof.

Clogged filter due to dirt, possibly bugs....normal life span issue of the filter.
Clogged filter due to rodent droppings?
Obviously would mean rodents are getting into your vehicle, which can lead to much more expensive repairs than just replacing a filter.

Of course. But the car is fairly new and there is no other evidence of rodents.

You know you live in Florida when you see a cockroach carrying a dead mouse.

And.....assuming that all the parts are in place properly.....I don't see where rodents could get into the air intake without chewing their own access hole.

That's why I say, just keep an eye on the situation. I hope it ISN'T rodents. But....
You might want to look up some of the many threads where people have had problems. Seems those rodents ARE pretty adept at finding their way into damageable parts of the vehicle.

It's kind of like Jurassic Park, it seems like with rodents when it comes to chewing on wiring or crapping in ventilation systems...Nature Finds A Way.

Many of the harrowing tales start with people experiencing foul odors.

If it is rodents....you'll know soon enough.
