i'm no expert, but it sounds like you need some balancing. have you considered pro long?

I have heard of it but not tried it yet. I'll look for a Seattle provider.

If it's the original battery then you have a weak module in block #6, it has diminished capacity. Can you post more information from Dr Hybrid, like actual voltages under load/charge?

I will attempt to do so.

I'm cautious about saying that this is a fairly new, warranted Dorman for fear of being stoned by the purists. It's charging fully and getting 48mpg. My mechanic said that Dr Prius, or any other app based diagnostic tool isn't to be trusted. It tested all clear on this same app a few months back though.

I think you can get some valuable info as hybrid battery exchange suggests above. Knowing your block voltages under load wil be very enlightening

The app isn't easy to pull information from but I will try. Maybe I get a tech stream data pull at a hybrid shop and see if they do the prolong service. How often is that useful to do, the balancing thing? Thanks btw

The app shows block voltages, the rest is up to you. With the car in Ready mode, put the gear selector in neutral, a/c on, watch the voltages as they fall. Let the battery discharge down to 14.5v per block, keeping an eye on #6. If it all of a sudden it falls by a 1.1-1.3 volts immediately stop the test, you have a bad cell within a module. Put the car back in P and let it recharge the hybrid battery.

Reconditioning is something that will make a healthy battery perform better, it will not fix a failing cell. On my bench reconditioning a battery with a weak cell just makes the failure show up at higher pack voltage.

Dr Prius and Hybrid Assistant monitor all 14 block voltages and plot/log them and compare the differences between them. This difference between blocks at various states of charge as well as overall pack capacity is the determining factor of how healthy a battery is, not the opinion of a mechanic who fails to understand how to properly asses a battery.

The only part in question with Dr Prius is what is their tolerance in specifying "poor balance block", this is why we are asking for real numbers.

If the pack is under warranty, your best bet might be to wait for failure

Check the dorman warranty to make sure opening the pack doesn’t void it

I did a recording of the battery monitoring but can't figure out how to share. Failure would be a bummer but I hear you. It's the most meaningful indicator.

It’s usually the only indicator that will trigger warranty. You get the code, but should still be able to drive it

So far no codes or red triangles so we'll keep driving her. HV battery charges to full and rarely goes below 3-4 bars so hopefully it doesn't crap out too soon.

@biglew8 has a thread here where a lot of folks have described their experience with Prolong, including me;).

    He’s also a Seattle local(y).

Good luck on the pack. I wish you many miles on the Dorman. If you don't junk the car when it fails, you may want to look into new cells for replacement versus buying someone else's old used cells...

We bought it with the Dorman already installed. We'll see. It's a great car for my son so we'll probably keep it alive and def install new cells when it comes to that-

Thanks for the guidance. I wasn't able to share the live data from DP app unfortunately. I did the driving test a few times and it called out block #6 every time. Seems there isn't much to do about this until the unit fails completely but I may look at getting her some prolong therapy.
