The description says a locally richer pocket of air/fuel mix at the spark plug, spreads the explosion to a leaner overall mix. The article touts this as new, unpredicented, but that sounds really familiar?

This is so exciting... I remember back when the dionsaurs were going extinct and we were so excited about how all the baby dinosaurs seemed so much more genetically advanced and sophisticated than their parents. Like evolution was about to take a great new huge leap into something better. It was an exciting time for the advancement for dinosaur DNA. This is just like that!!!

This is incredible... The wonders of planet destroying pollution tech never ceases to amaze... It's like all our problems are solved and we still get to buy gas at our favorite gas station... What could go wrong?

2% of all worldwide light-vehicles sold have no tail pipe pollution, it's about time to slash or reduce the remaining 98% pollution, don't you agree?

The lean burning CRX HF and Civic VX from the '80s and '90s used this stratified charge.

Did someone roll coal in your Cheerios?

It will be decades before plug ins make up a sizeable portion of cars and trucks on the road, and some roles and uses will never be suitable for a pure BEV. We should we stop making ICEs cleaner until then?

HCCI combines the efficiency of a diesel engine with the ease of emission controls of a gasoline one. Without the need for electric motors and a battery, it could provide the efficiency and cleanliness of a hybrid without the thousand of dollars price increase.

Or, it could be used in a hybrid to get even more efficiency and cleanliness.

It strikes me as really short-sighted when car companies, etc. don't realize that the longer we push off the change to high-efficiency transportation, the more abrupt and radical the change will need to be. (unless, of course, you'd rather have everyone move inland and abandon the trillions in coastal property we have.)

There's lotsa tricks. Our last Honda Civic Hybrid (gone to the great scrap yard in the sky now) had dual-cam lobes: low lift for most of the time, high lift that only kicked in if you were doing something like accelerating on an up-grade. for example.

If you're upset about it, take action! Call your legislator and demand higher fuel taxes. Well, demand better highway maintenance, and tell them you support higher fuel taxes to pay for it.

You already know that fuel price is the only leverage that works. Gas prices haven't been in the pain zone for a while and very recently it's going down.

The wikipedia seems to have a pretty thorough history of stratified charge engines back to 1887.

But this is the new super-deluxe version...

And just because we've spent a century "advancing" vehicle powertrain technology by not advancing it very much because a small number of people wanted to be the richest, doesn't mean Mazda can't use ads to make it seem like like a revolutionary transformation to boost your MPG back up to 1990's standards.

My area of expertise is carbon uptake via optimizing living, thriving ecological systems. And I'm sure you're not surprised that with this skill set I'm more of a threat than a benefit to capitalism. But if you want talk estuaries, atmospheric microbiology, forest secession and transforming land use to maximize absorption, meet me in the unemployment line and I'd be happy to share my vision.

Besides, there's plenty of fossil fool windmill jousters who have never-ending temper tantrums that are easily silenced by oil companies throwing around tens of millions. It's a small price to pay to make sure your vote doesn't count.

It'll take alot longer than decades as far as industry denialists like yourself is concerned. If anyone wants to post anything that advances fossil fuel's future in an online forum focused on the industry's rapid demise, good 'Ol Troll Bait will be happy to help you lie and misinform. It helps him pay his bills.
