I had an old laptop bag hung over the backseat headrest driver side and some jerk stupid criminal decided to break the back door window and grab the bag. The value of the contents of the bag was minimal so the jerk was probably not happy. And if you are thinking of burglarizing vehicles for income, why not at least google it and find out out to break a car window without using a pry bar and causing body damage. It is not that difficult.

Anyway...The idea of auto safety glass is that it breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces. While most of the glass in my Prime rear window did that, some of it breaks into tiny pieces and some are not even visible until you notice something sharp poked your finger yet you still can't see it. I found this out while vacuuming out the glass. If a person had been in the vehicle while this glass shattered, a tiny piece could easily lodge in your eye and be very dangerous. Or you might even inhale a piece. Has anyone had a similar experience with modern auto glass? Much better than a large shard severing a neck artery but still seems surprisingly hazardous. (And it was no fun driving from Golden to Denver with the window gone and the temp around 20F.)

A lint roller might help....but yeah.
You're going to find itty-bitty pieces of glass for the rest of your car's life, and as you pointed out in your post.....it's SAFETY glass, not convenience glass.

    Cheap lesson......

    Good Luck!

The windshield is laminated, so usually the glass stays stuck to the plastic layer. The front side windows are also laminated in the Prime (for acoustics I think), so they probably work the same way as the windshield.

I probably should have used such a vacuum if I had one. But the auto body shop said they have the car detailed after the repair work to get any last traces of glass removed from inside the vehicle.

I had the wind blow in a side window once (I work at an extreme event wind site) and what you have to do is vacuum over, and over and over again, getting into every tiny space from every angle - especially under the seats and next to the seat rails.

Amazing what the wind can do. I knew a woman decades ago who had the windshield on her pickup blown out near Boulder while she was refueling. Her side window was rolled down and the wind pressure entered there and popped out the windshield.

I work just South of Boulder, in front of Eldorado Canyon. When the wind blew in my side window, it was about 120mph.

Actually I think that was near where she was when the windshield popped out - at the turnoff to El Dorado Canyon.

It seems laminated glass has much advantage in case of glass breakage. Why don't they use laminated glass for all of glasses? Does it cost much more?

This might be a reason to get tinted glass where the film would tend to hold the glass together, make it harder to break, and also tend to hide car contents from jerks.

I tried searching the internet for info on this special vacuum. Couldn't find any information. Most sites say to use a shop vac. Perhaps there isn't such a vacuum and that article was in error.

Maybe it makes it harder to escape from the car after an accident? But if they use it on the front windows it seems like they could use it on all the windows since there is a driver more often than there are rear passengers.
