The Out-LANDER is both plugin AND quick charge capable ... as well as having an actual tow rating. Of course the mpg in its charge sustain mode will likely not beat Subaru phev, and the price is likely more for the mitsu.

One article mentions that is the unadjusted number from the test, So it will probably be closer to 20 miles.
Still just speculation on exactly what parts are Toyota's.
How old is your Subaru? The Imperza saw some impressive gains when they switched to a CVT and new AWD system.

Oh mine is old enough, and let's just say that between the manufacturer, me, and my tuner (yeah) nobody selected any of the available choices to save gas. It was never in the plan for that particular car.

I've driven a couple of the newer ones and I agree- they did improve considerably with the CVT, but I suspect there is still more to earn.

Their Crosstrek hybrid showed that there might not be much to earn. A Toyota hybrid system would be expected to do better, but we are still in the dark on specifications. Original reports had Subaru saying this PHEV would use their boxer engine, transmission, and AWD system.

That crosstrek hybrid was a weird car. The loudest message that came from Subaru was that the hybridization was done to improve performance rather than fuel economy. Except the car had little performance and relatively unchanged fuel economy. I never did find a satisfactory explanation.

Hopefully whatever they roll next will not be as muddled, even if it also isn't great.

If I had my druthers it would be a Subaru flat engine turning a new transmission with a toyota power split device & MGs, whose output then drove a controllable center differential similar to their old 5EAT (JATCO 507) transmission. That would eliminate the riskiest parts of the Subaru CVT while maintaining the capability for a wide band of infinitely variable gear ratios for fuel savings.

Naturally I don't have the resources to test this out and see if it's the best arrangement but I like the idea anyway.

my daughter says he impreza she is looking at gets 28/38 with repairs of a bit better. if her weekend 500 miles results in 40 mpg, that would be imprezzive

Toyota does have transverse hybrid transaxles, they just couldn't be called Prime parts. It is the vagueness of the 'Prime parts' that has lead to all the questions here.

The word at the dealership level is that they may not be available in the U.S. for awhile if at all. A good friend is a sales manager at a Suburu dealership and that is what they have heard.

    Info came out.

Not cheap. Starting $35k. Same Prime battery. Real AWD unlike Toyota. Only 17 miles ev. 35mpg in hybrid mode. 3 gallons smaller gas tank.

Right, never mind. I'll hold for the next or next-after generation.

Yap, with that price tag and EV/mpg spec, I think I am better off with 2019 Rav4.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid road test and driving impressions - Autoblog
    2019 Subaru Crosstrek - Models | Subaru
    • Equipped like the Limited(including the larger wheels)
    • Loses 5 cubic feet of cargo space
    • Is a blended PHEV; no EV only mode. Max EV speed 62mph.
    • Has hold and charge mode.
    • 1000 pound tow rating.
    • Article calls it a parallel hybrid.
    • CarPlay and Android Auto.
    • Will only be in inventory in 10 states, others outside can order it.
Considering the design, the efficiency numbers aren't bad. It is an improvement over the first hybrid model, which is only a little bit better than the current Crosstrek ICE(27 city/33 highway/29 combined). It actually beats the current Rav4 hybrid by a smidge, and trounces the Outlander PHEV, which is its only direct competitor. It appears that the engine is unchanged from the ICE models.

The Crosstrek is actually designed for offroad use. The 8.7in ground clearance and mechanical AWD works against fuel efficiency, but for the minority that truly go off road, it will be better than the Rav4.

The price is @$500 more than the base Outlander PHEV.

Base Outlander is only 2wd though, correct?

It's AWD only for the hybrid.
Its 5 mile EV range advantage over the Crosstrek is because of a 12kWh battery pack.

I actually can't complain about the car itself, the specs as posted would work just fine for me. It ticks the boxes.

But no way am I paying that much for it. There are far less expensive ways to do it.
