Hi all. I'm going to be doing my own oil changes. What filter is best to buy? Toyota filter or aftermarket? Where do you buy yours and what are they going for? It the Toyota filter actually better? Any links online? Thanks.

    "Best" is subjective.

While WIX, Purolator, FRAM, BOSCH, ACDelco and Mahle are all constructors of quality branded and sub-branded filters, you really do not know what you are getting unless you purchase an OEM filter built to factory specifications by one of the above specialty firms. No automotive OEM that I am aware of actually makes filters, but they do set STRICT specifications for them, which are often disregarded to increase profits in the "aftermarket".

My suggestion is to buy OEM if you can and if not, at least a world-wide manufacturer of filters as noted above.

I buy Fram Ultra filters at Walmart. I did not check if local Walmarts have the specific one for your Prius model, but it is Fram XG4967, (unless I made a typo). 99% filtration efficiency down to 20 microns with 20k mile rating. Prior to that I was using Mobil 1 Extended Performance with “A” appended to the part #. 99% efficiency down to 30 microns with 20k mile rating. Pick one up, open the box, and you can see/feel the substantial difference.

    My $0.02.

    $3.95.
2006 Toyota Prius Parts - Camelback Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Parts - Free Shipping

Free ground shipping of $150+ in purchase. Easy to hit $150 spend if you group lots of OF, and other maintenance parts (water pump, belt, idler pulley, inverter pump, crush washers, brake pads, brake shoes, etc). If friends drive Toyotas, combine their maintenance items with yours, so you don’t have to spend as much.

Your local dealer’s website might list parts specials; oil filters might be at a reasonable price. Ask if they will match online Toyota dealer prices, if not reasonable.

Crush washers cheaper from Amazon and fleaBay (eBay), bythe big bagfull vs individually.

I always buy 10x Toyota OEM oil filters from eBay to get the best price. Of course this also includes free washers and free shipping.

Oem $4 at dealer or Amazon or eBay.

    Part number 90915-YZZF2

Years ago at my dealer they used to come with the oil pan bolt washer. Not included anymore. If car new to you pick up one of those washers too. I replace my washer every few changes. Don’t have that part number.

I've been buying everything in person, at dealership parts counters (various: Honda, Toyota, now Mazda). Buy stuff just-in-time.

Still, over the last decade I've noticed a phenomena: pretty much EVERY time I arrive at dealership, it's nigh impossible to find a parking spot.

Thats for OEM products, oil filters. If it's something like spark plugs for example, I use a local auto parts specialty place.

I'm usually filling up my bulk oil container too, killing two birds. And I can drool over the new cars a bit. Plus we usually pick a sunny day, go from there to rocky point park with the shiba, ice cream for all. :)

I use Fram myself but I recall someone saying you can get a longer filter at the dealer. That would sure help in getting them off.

I guess I have been getting lucky with my crush washer. Original 2007 washer, every 5k oil change (DIY), not one drip from it ever!

I use Fram PH4967 which I purchase at Walmart. I find it easier to not stock up and just buy what I need when needed.

I change oil every 5000 miles. If I was using a longer oil change interval then I would likely use a more spendy oil filter.

ETA: Currently, Fram PH4967 filters are $3.88 at Walmart plus sales tax.

Any brand name oil filter would be good enough for a Prius engine. I pay $3 for Bosch workshop filters

Apparently the contemporary Camry filter is compatible and longer. I've never bothered since the ones I buy are rated for longer intervals than I'll ever go anyway, but it's something to try if you want.

Unfortunately, after many years my dad and friends having used them, I have found that Fram filers are really poor quality.

I now only buy genuine Toyota off of Amazon.
