Next-gen spoked magnet design spins up cheaper, lighter, more powerful electric motor

    tl;dr
When magnets get hot, the performance of an electric motor drops, and current motor design used in cars makes directly cooling them hard to impossible. So you need more expensive magnets that can handle the heat, or use a bigger, heavier motor for a given power output.

The spoke arrangement of magnets(above, black the magnets) makes direct cooling of the magnets possible. The arrangement also means less magnet material is is needed for the same output; 25% less.

Not a new concept, but this company, Equipmake, has a cheaper way of making them. Their motors will appear in the Ariel Hipercar and an electric bus, both planned for 2020.

I hope these suckers aren't like so many touting vapor-ware / cheap no loss /charge in 5 minutes / 400 mile battery tech, or 95% efficient PV solar.

They are already going into two vehicles.

GE and others knew about the advantages of this spoke design. It was just easier to come up with a way to make the standard design cheaper. The article is worth the read.

If they were able to make the magnets in a tear drop shaped they could boost performance even more, increase cooling, and decrease amount of material used. Of course durability, as well as cost of tear drop shaped magnets is prohibitive, at least for the moment.

The article is a little light on technical details:
    • Magnetic flux lines and intensity
    • Mechanical stress a there is no description of stress on the relatively low stress magnets
It takes more technical details than an advocacy articles to pique my curiosity.
