I was struggling between volt and prime when shopping. Then finally got the prime due to better price, fuel efficiency and TSS. Competitions definitely is there but can't imagine they will completely close that product line.

Eventually, in order to get plug-ins and BEV's to the mainstream, they will have to versions of regular ICE models especially designed for variety of power units. On that basis, the costs of structure of all but the drive and power components will be reduced by the "economy of scale."

OK this must mean only one thing: the bottom in oil is in. Time to buy the oil futures.
Lets not forget when Volt started: at the oil price peak in 2008.

The production design model officially unveiled on September 16, 2008,

The EV1 was spiked for malicious anti-progress reasons, and died alone. The Volt is caught in the broad passenger sedan downdraft, and is sharing its extinction with many other sedans from GM/Ford/Chrysler, and 15% of GM's workforce.

There is still the Buick version in China, with a crossover model arriving soon. The Volt drive train isn't going away. Sedans and hybrids are tough sells in the US at this time.

With the Bolt, I suspect many potential buyers decided carrying around an ICE for limited times of use wasn't worth it.

Toyota is also killing cars globally with the introduction of the new Corolla.

    Correct!

The next generation of vehicles will be designed as BEV's, with the ICE based drives as an afterthought.

The same occurred in the 1980's with the switch from rear wheel drive to front wheel drives. At first, rear wheel drives were inexpensive and front wheel drives were much more expensive. The equation reversed in the early 2000's and will eventually happen with BEV's.

next gen being 2040? gm et al have a long way to go before ridesharing, charging locations and bev's become a profit center.
if oil spikes in the meantime, a lot of companies are going to get caught with their pants down.

Interestingly, GM's official angle is this is a move towards "Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion". This sounds more like self-driving BEVs are on a horizon at GM.
