Forget being ICE'd, I've been Tesla'd! :)

Not very long ago I had to start going to a clinic once every two weeks to receive chemo therapy. The clinic is 20 miles from home. I found out they have two free Clipper Creek destination chargers with spots for just two cars. Supposedly, parking in these spots are limited to two hours. Invariably when I get there these is at least one, sometimes two Tesla model S's there. Even though I suppose destination chargers for Tesla's make sense, I have to wonder: should a BEV with over 200 miles range really be using these spots when more limited range cars, such as my Prime, or the first gen Leaf and the Chevy Volt I saw parked near there, would benefit much more from destination chargers? I seriously doubt these Tesla owners are commuting 150 miles to the Hospital, thus potentially inducing range anxiety. And I find it difficult to believe they are not being charged at home every night.

Any brand car should be able to use those.
I would hope though, that anyone plugging in did so because they need the charge. It is quite possible that those owners are short on range, or don’t have charging at home.

If it is the same car each time, I would definitely mention it inside. Compliment the business owners on having those chargers available and tell them you would love to use those but there is always a Tesla taking the spot.
They may add more spots, or check with their employees to see if one of them is filling the spot(s).

As a matter of common courtesy, no plugin owners should be charging when they don’t need it if charging spots are limited. And, they should move their cars when the charge is complete, or time limit reached.

Looking at this from the other side, why should a plug in with an engine as back up take up a charging spot that might be needed for a BEV?

Everyone thinks "their" entitlement is more important. Until laws are clearly written and consistently enforced regarding this, the internal squabbles will happen...maybe even after...for some.

haha... what's next? externally visible SOC meters so we can argue over who needs the plug more right at that moment?

This is getting as silly as the airlines (seemingly) having more boarding groups than rows of seats on the plane.

I’ve gone to charge while under 10% in my smart electric drive (BEV) only to see both spots taken up by phevs. I waited around for a good hour before one owner came out to retrieve something from their car. I had to politely ask if they would mind letting me plug in for a while so I could get home or the next charger.

I got quite an earful about being “ill prepared” and buying the wrong car. All I needed was to plug in for 30 minutes to make it to the next closest charger.

The conversations and experiences can go both ways.

I wish more people learned compassion and still had common decency.

I do believe your Prius Prime has way more than 200 mile range. Probably more like 500 miles. I know my Gen 2 Prius has 400 miles on a bad day, closer to 500 miles on a good one.

    I don’t see that.
I see it as a classic case of lack of common courtesy.
If lack of common courtesy while operating a vehicle means that vehicle drive train isn’t ready for prime time, I’d say no cars are ready for prime time:p

Free charging is irresistible. Sounds great on the surface, but brings out the worst in many.

Properly priced charging will fix most of these cases. It then becomes not worth the squatters time and the person who “needs” it is more than willing to pay a dime.

    Would that be:

    a) free (to customer) charging stations?
    or
    b) paid (by customer) charging stations?

With a) we would need a lot more charging stations than with b).

With b), homeowners still do the lion's share of charging at their residences and occasionally abroad when needed; apartment dwellers without charging infrastructure still have a means to re-charge as they would refuel at a gas station. Also, the economic incentives for public and private investment to build such infrastructure favor b).

i can only speak for myself. i don't care if they are free or not, i don't think that encourages bev sales one way or the other.
for local driving, i would only be charging at home, as i do now.

for a long distance bev commitment, i would want to know that charging would be as quick and simple as gassing up.
and if an ev lover like me feels that way, you can imagine what most gasser drivers think.

i don't want to have range anxiety searching for an open charging station because there's no room at the inn.

Probably the nicest supercharging station resides in Kettleman City which is halfway between San Francisco and LA and it has 40 charging stations.

The lounge area is great. But Elon probably had a hand in what was put there.

We passed a dozen or so Model3’s on our way down south last Saturday and lost count of the model S’s and X’s along the way.

But I’m sure not all are this way;).

    Maybe someday soon(y).

Specific to the original post above, there is a very good chance the Tesla vehicles are owned by physicians who work at the clinic.

At the health care centers in my area of northern California, most of the Teslas in the parking areas belong to physicians. It's hard to pass up free.:D

Our medical center has 12 level-2 charging stations in the basement of the main parking lot. With a $1.35/hr fee, there is always an open spot. If you plug in and only need an hour charge but leave your vehicle plugged in for your whole work shift, you get charged for every hour plugged in. There are occasionally some who ICE the spaces or plug-ins who park there but don't charge, but parking enforcement will reliably address this as they are tied to the medical center.

Range anxiety is a thing. For some BEV buyers, knowing there is public charging is a push for the purchase. Even when a BEV has the range for a person's daily drive, a new car is a huge purchase. Minor concerns are enough to such a purchase.
