Hi folks - been a while since I've posted here but I would appreciate any help with an issue I caused on my wife's 2008 prius. I replaced the HID headlight bulbs and had done the same a year a so on my 08 prius without any problems. . I had some issues with her install. I had the power connector on passenger side headlamp not seated correctly. It's the one with the braided lead and metal head that connects to the hid bulb housing. When I turned car on there was rapid flickering on that bulb and some sputtering sounds could be heard. I fixed the connection and all was well - so I thought. I was happy that the new bulb was destroyed.

When I tried the high beams the blue high beam indicator lights upon dash but no high beams. Also, not sure if this related, my front side marker lamps are out on the front passenger and driver. I believe they were working but I can swear to it. I checked some fuses for high beams and they seem to be ok.

Not sure where to go with this. Before I pull it apart and put the old bulbs back in I'd appreciate any guidance that any of you hopefully will kindly provide.

    Thanks in advance -
    Steve

Update - only high beams an issue now. The side markers had nothing to do with anything. Measured 12 volts at the sockets and no continuity on bulb terminals. They looked ok but on close inspection they were burnt out.

The HID light has a motor which powers a reflector to project the light beam up and down. You will need to figure out why that is not working.

Thanks Patrick. I just finished going over the problem again. After reading about how the mechanism works I checked the alignment on the new bulbs and they were off - the bulb was blocking the shutter's motion on both headlamps. I opened the headlamp socket lids and redid the work and now everything is working fine. Now on to installing the foglamp bulbs which are also out. Need them for inspection. They are pretty much useless but if the equipment is installed on the vehicle it has to work to pass PA State inspections. (argggh)

Question - I noticed that after the bulb were properly aligned that the u shaped clip doesn't seem to lock the bulb in place 100%. There is a little play/movement on the fastened bulb in the socket. I'm guessing this is normal. Both sides feel the same. Maybe when misaligned the bulb sat a little high in the socket because it couldn't seat properly - a bit away from where the base meets the rim of the socket. This made the clip artificially apply more pressure to the base and appear to be tighter in socket than now ?
