Starts at US$27,300 for the LE AWD-e (including $920 destination). XLE AWD-e costs $29,740.

Why won't this be coming to the Prime? Doesn't seem fair...

This is my SWAG on that. In 2019 all 2WD Prius will be powered by Lithium Ion batteries, as do all Primes.
AWD Prius will us Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, which operate 18 degrees F colder than Li-ion. Toyota seem to think AWD cars will be used in colder weather. Building a PHEV with NiMH batteries would fill the entire hatch, leaving no room for luggage. So Primes are 2WD as you can't build a cold weather PHEV with luggage space.

AWD Primes used just for rain may have been too small a niche, given no rear wiper.

Good point, Jimbo, that explains the trade-offs. I really have my heart set on a Prime (eventually, at least), and I live in Atlanta, so not having AWD-e isn't a real drawback for about 51 weeks out of the year.

Not too bad! I was expecting more of a markup that that.

I'm assuming they did that to be competitive with the lower end Subarus.

This is looking like a great choice for folks like me in the 'north country'. I really like the fact that it doesn't affect MPG too much at all.

In addition to the NiMH bit, the Prius had an AWD option since the gen4 release in Japan. Offering it another market doesn't entail much effort.

On the other hand, the Prime never had it. So adding it will take more effort. The AWD should be able to fit on there, but it isn't as easy as just bolting it on. Its rear end already has more weight, with different rear spring rates to compensate. The additional weight could mean different conditions for the economy tests. Then the slight reduction in MPG will mean a reduction in EV range.

seems reasonable, especially if they discount them the toyota way. otherwise, my daughters new impreza may be a better long term buy.

I can see the first AWD Prius with monster mudders, a big LED light bar and a winch in the front. Someone good with Photoshop could make a good one as a prototype.:D

Its sells a bit less than 3gen, but more than in Portugal. Prius+ is still very well succeeded there due to a tempting price.

I haven't seen this 2WD Prius battery type, probably if they stick with NimH, maybe it explains the upcharge. 2WD in USA will be Lithium AFAIK.

    But the important part,

Where are the replacement parts diagrams for the rear Prius transaxle?

And how many HP is the thing?

    Active cooling?

    Inquiring minds need to know

You know is is the same active fan cooling as always. At least the Prius is still being produced unlike some other car I can think of ...

    Please go and troll elsewhere.

    ?

Hot-rodding the Toyota MGR - Page 10 - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum - EcoModder.com

For many Prius replacement parts you can locate a simple diagram On the parts counter websites giving you an idea of what it looks like.

I would like to find the rear transaxle specs (mgr?) and I doubt it has a fan, previous Toyo rear transaxles could loose AWD power in heavy snow due to heavy constant demands on the system.

If my post is in the wrong thread mods feel free to move, I remember Danny stating to keep all AWD discussion in one thread
