Why would killing electric car subsidies kill plug-ins and benefit Tesla? Tesla's are pure-electric, yes?

I'm thinking the opposite, but maybe I'm missing something.

    A. This won't happen. Trump can't do this with his signature. Congress could, but it seems more likely they would expand the rebates, not end them.

    B. Tesla has already hit their 200,000 number. Actually, by the end of the year I believe they will be well over 300,000. The rebates for Tesla will be completely gone by the end of 2019. I don't know that any change to the rebate would have any affect before the end of 2019. The advantage to Tesla would be that other manufactures have to compete without a $7500/unit price advantage.

My friend's brother worked as a National Bank Examiner in Washington, DC years, ago. He said that "Kudzu" would often arrive at work drunk. He never considered him to be a good economist.

Greenspan was caught up in his own celebrity and public hype. Bernanki actually saved the economy from a depression. The last 10 years, however, was not kind to seniors, who depended mostly on fixed interest income.

Yup! Myself, and a few others did not participate in the recession. We used it as an opportunity.

Remember Teslas are plug ins too. All plug ins benefit from the $2500-$7500 tax credit. It makes them more competitive to replace ICE only vehicles. If the tax credit completely goes away, there will be less plug ins manufactured and sold yearly. When the manufacturing cost of plug ins is less than or equal ICE vehicles is when plug ins can be sold without a tax credit. But that point is not here yet except for Tesla because they're like Apple, people will pay more for the brand, it's synonymous with speed and luxury. I do think a small percentage will buy other EVs over the $35,000 Tesla Model 3 if they can get a $7500 credit in 2019.

I don't have to agree with Trump but it is time these cars start living in the real world.

Especially when the Manufacturers waste so much time and money on vehicles like the Cruze.

The problem with subsidies and rebates is how dealers and manufacturers take advantage of them. They raise the real price of the goods to cover and profit from the rebate.

The market reduces the resale value of the car to reflect the price paid after the rebate.

So you mean that the real factory cost of a Prime is less than that of the non-Prime?

At least the plug-in subsidies, like the hybrid subsidies before them, will expire in a somewhat short timeframe. The oil and coal subsidies have not.

Could be on resale value. Only time will tell.

for those of us driving vehicles that came with tax credits, it may have been part of the equation.

looking at it in the light of environmental progress, i would not want them to go away, any more than solar panel credits or other progressive technology.

to claim that these vehicles are cheaper to build than gassers is either naive or disingenuous

for those on the other side of the climate change debate, i have no words of wisdom, but proceed at your own peril

It's called "the economy of scale." Any start up is expensive. My husband's retired engineer friend remembers the first IBM PC with two 5-1/4 inch floppy drives, no hard drive and 32k of ram, when it retailed for $4200.

He also told me of the Chevy Citation and Datsun F10 that cost 40 per cent more to build and sell than rear wheel drive cars in the early 1980's. Now, all rear wheel drives cost more to build than front wheel drives. Witness sports cars like Mustang, Camaro, full sized SUV;s and pickup trucks.

agreed, that's why they need subsidies to get going. they are not going yet.
plus with phev's, you have two technologies in one package, making them more expensive, even in large production
