Aston Martin has announces a program to convert their older cars to electric so they do not get banned from UK's cities. The conversion is reversible should somebody later want a gasoline engine.

An EV kit using existing motor & transmission mountings. Perhaps @Bill the Engineer can design one for Toyota after he retires :D

Does that mean 007 won't be able to throw down and oil slick as well? Sean Connery got out just in time.

Reversible? Too funny? And why would anyone want or even legally be able to go back to a gas engine? Reminds me of the state that past a law when the first horseless carriages took to the trails. The law said that if your horseless carriage spooked a team of horses you had to turn off your engine and put a tarp over your vehicle till the horses past by. Kind of like a reversible gas vehicle that can revert back to a big tarp of nothing that doesn't go anywhere...

Original Tesla proto-types were built on Lotus frames... Then they realized the weight of the battery totally ruined all the collision safety math and had to start over from scratch.

When I worked in an autoshop back in high school in the mid 80's one of the mechanics projects was putting a Mazda rotary engine in an old late' 50's model MG midget... He had to do a lot of welding. :)

These are expensive classic cars not daily drivers. The first one they are converting is a 1970.

If you've got a few million tied up in a classic car, reversible electric conversion allows you to keep using it. Secondly it enables show & drive usage for future owners in an electric-only auto environment. Thirdly it also allows the museums and purists to restore it to originality once the rarity value goes so high that it isn't practical to show or drive outdoors anymore. That's a lot of effort to preserve and enhance the value of the investment.

It strikes me as a perfectly responsible long-term plan.

Great ... as if our garage isn't overcrowded as it is - now i gotta make room for storing an engine stand w/engine, shelving for a tranny, radiator & who knows what else. Oh wait i forgot, now I can't afford an astin martin? .... i'll just stick all the extra junk in my 10 car garage behind the tennis courts.

I don't think anyone on this forum is wealthy enough to even begin to think how the super wealthy thinks about the crazy money it would take to do the conversion. Those people don't buy a Prius to begin with.

    evidently - you'd be surprised. Take the head of Ikea as 1st example;
    OTHER billionair's rides ~

Eric Schmidt - Google software Chief - Prius
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg - an Acura
Steve Ballmer - Microsoft CEO - Fusion hybrid
Billionaires who drive astonishingly cheap cars - AOL
Similarly, before his death, multi-billion air Sam Walden drove a 20+ year old pickup truck.
Yes - the 10Lb - gold chain wearing ghetto wealthy will waste money on everything, but that goes more to character. Wealth doesn't give you character, it mearly accentuates what you already have.

Time will tell how many of these cars will be converted and what the $$$ cost is. A lot of the super rich are extremely frugal I knew that, that is why they have all that money in the first place.

Most earlier EV conversions made use of existing mounting parts. They even tended to keep the transmission, which was usually a manual.

If you have the Aston, you have a big enough garage.

Back in the 90's before Prius first arrived, I had friends that were part of the electric car conversion scene... Usually lightweight Japanese trucks and a bunch of 12v batteries and a pathetically underpowered electric motor. All those folks went the way of the dinosaurs in the early 2000's when Prius and the first electric cars came along...

So it makes sense that they'd make a comeback now that there's way more awesome battery and electric motor options.... Here's my favorite conversion crew on YouTube:
