The factory size filter is a bit short and hard to grab.. on previous cars I've owned.. I found there were filter models that were the same thread, and diameter, but a bit longer for greater capacity and easier reach.
Anybody know a specific one that works.

I looked around in the oil filter section and found one that looked like a good choice..
The factory Mobil 1 filter is
    M1-103A
The one was larger and looked compatible was
    M1-110A

But figured I'd ask if anyone had personal experience with one that worked.

    Thanks. 20181204_145005.jpeg

This is awesome... Great idea!!!! I already have my oil filter for the next oil change, but I will definitely try this for the change after the next one... What is the cars are the larger size Mobil 1 compatible with?

My main motivation is every time I do an oil change I always pause and look at the oil filter and say, gee, seems a little too small. I'd so love those days to be over especially cause I'm running full synthetic and only changing every 9K miles (mostly freeway miles).

The bigger filter fit so why not. Longer is fine but can't be much bigger in diameter.

Funny, Prius oil filters are about the same size as my lawn mower. :)

I don't see why the larger filter wouldn't work, good luck you are in uncharted territory.

Threaded hole might be different, and bypass pressure setting not the same. I checked specs on http://www.fram.com cross reference...

I know right, I was in the Tractor&Farm supply store the other day and I saw some oil filters for small engines that looked like they'd fit on my Prius.

They could make oil filters more universal but then that would make too much sense wouldn't it.

I once owned a Ford product that came with their TRX wheel and tire package and you could only put Michelin TRX tires on the wheels. Could you imagine how expensive tires would be if every auto company has odd size wheels and tires.

Just be glad they didn't get away with their attempts to make proprietary gas... Can you imagine that your car would only fit a gas pump nozzle that was licensed by the auto maker? They wanted to do that and failed. Oil industry was too greedy to give them that advantage...

Toyota part # 90915YZZD3 is the one you want. It is used in many other Toyotas. It has the same thread and gasket as the one on the Gen 2 Prius. The same end cap wrench fits. It is a longer version of the one on your Prius.

I used a fram based off the Purolator chart. The Purolator is what someone else recommended on Prius Chat.

How many miles do you have on your Prius? I use full synthetic and change mine every 5k or so. The majority of the miles I put on it is highway. I wonder if that 5k is overkill, and I should go longer.

I have 208k on mine and I’ve made the observation that I burn virtually no oil for the first 3000 miles or so, then gradually as I get closer to 5,000 I burn it a bit faster and faster. Nothing too bad (yet) thankfully.

Btw I use the Toyota YZZF1 to get that slightly bigger filter.

245,000 miles on er. This my first oil change with the bigger filter. Like to see it cleaner at 5000 when I change it next. It's pretty dirty at 5000 with synthetic.
I burn maybe a third of a quart of oil at 5000.
50-50 around town driving and freeway.

I've used the Purolator PL20195 for over 100k miles and had no issues. It makes changing the filter a lot easier as you can grip it a lot better, and that slight increase in size means I can just put 4qt in at an oil change without going over the full mark.

Does it make any material difference to the function or reliability of the vehicle? Probably not, if you're doing your oil changes on time. But it costs pretty much the same as the normal sized filters, so I figure the few small benefits are worth it.
