    Hi guys!

It's time to change oil and I thought I would do it my self this time. I've heard 0W-20 is the most commonly used on this car. Would I be safe going for this kind of oil? I live in LA, so lot's of highway/freeway driving.

Always follow you manual and oil cap for oil weight. If you haven’t red it, nows the time.

    In a word: NO.

At 8 years old, your engine must have some wear so you should NOT use any oil that has lower numbers than what they recommended when it was new (probably shown right on the oil fill cap). If it is using any oil between changes, even a slightly higher viscosity would be OK.

Wait a sec: 0W20 is the spec'd oil.

Goofy trivia: the latest US 4th gen Prius Warranty and Maintenance Booklets have a smattering of the expression 0W16. It's at odds with statements other where in the book that say 0W20. Seems like a typo that crept in; 0W16 is mentioned for some new Toyota, maybe the latest Camry?

Just out of curiousity I emailed Toyota and they responded that the 0W16 mentions were incorrect; that 0W20 is the place you want to be.

The 0W-20 viscosity is fine, why not go to Walmart and buy brand name full synthetic oil for ~$23.

    That's for 5 quarts?

Up here my Toyota dealership sells me Toyota 0W20 bulk. Currently $4.90 (CDN) per liter, was $4.50 till recently. I bring in a big gas container, get ~10 liters at a time (my son's got a vehicle taking the same viscosity).

My only beef with the Walmart route is the never-ending dump of motor oil contaminated bottles into the recycle stream, or straight to landfills.

    OK, I stand corrected.
It wasn't too long before that when 0W20 didn't exist.....or wasn't widely available.

But my comment about oil usage still applies.
As the engine starts to use oil, it is perfectly OK to up the viscosity of the oil you use by a bit.

AND.....as it approaches 10 years old or 100K miles, it makes little or no sense to pay extra for "premium" oil.

Why not "high mileage" oil then?

I would go to "high mileage" oil only if it's consuming a lot, basically a last ditch effort to stretch an engine's life. And you want to stick with it, once you make the switch: high mileage oil swells rubber, and if you go back to regular oil the rubber can contract back, resulting in consumption rates worse than at the outset.

According to Sam Spade 2, even with an engine in that scenario, its just not worth putting in that type of premium oil.

I have no idea what a "premium" oil is. If solely price, see post #8.

    Asked and answered.

I would add that if the OP is buying earl from Amazon, then he or she might be DIY’ing.

If that is the case then there is little to be gained by buying some “super premium” oil for a 9 year old car, especially if oil use rate is unknown and the car is still on a 10,000 mile OCI.
I know left coasters do not like to admit to going to WalMart, but I’d get a commonly used oil and filter from a big box store, club down to a 5K OCI (maybe keep the filter at 10K if it’s a PTIA to get to) and start monitoring for oil use.
REMEMBER....you also have to worry about the health of your catalytic converter, and the most common cause of needing a new cat on the left coast is NOT because they’re getting stolen for the scrap value!
    ;)
People buy Priuses to save money.
Spending about 30-percent more for some Gucci brand of oil just for the placebo effect seems to run counter to the Prius Life.

    Good Luck!

Some of them are environmentally conscious too. I still bring the occasional oil bottle down to Mr. Lube (hopefully the recycle it), transaxle/transmission fluid, differential fluid, hypoid gear oil, but for motor oil, I went to bulk, purchased from my nearby Toyota dealership about 3~4 years back.

I'm changing oil on 3 cars now, so if it was 1 liter (or quart), that's 20~25 bottles less, in the recycle stream. I think too, a high percentage of those used oil bottles go straight to landfills.

The big resistance to bulk motor oil is paranoia about quality. I used to get Toyota 0W20 in the bottles, and now just dispensed into my bulk container, it certainly looks to be the same stuff, and I've never seen particulate in it.

I hope it’s not actually 5W-30 bulk mineral oil used in 2G Prius...

They have both synth 0W20 and (conventional) 5W20, and I'd assume (conventional) 5W30 as well. I've got the first two, 0W20 for a couple of vehicles, and 5W20 for a Pilot spec'ing that weight.

Basicaly it's a matter of trust; I take them at their word.

The 5W20 is dirt-cheap, $2.80 (CDN) per liter.

My current and next oil change combo- filter protects up to 20,000 miles.

I'm surprised not to be able to find -- at the Mobil Web site -- an oil or filter recommendation for *any* Prius.
