The stock filter's available locally from any Toyota dealership parts department, p/n: 04152-YZZA6.

At their Product Selector I plugged in the Year (initially 2015, but I tried several others as well), Make (Toyota, obviously), and Prius is not one of the available options under Model.

You are right. The website has a link to "Let us know" if you care to complain that Prius is not listed as a model.

However if you get Mobil 1 0W-20 viscosity, that would be a fine choice.

Yes, but if and ONLY IF it is starting to use more oil than was "normal" when it was newer.
Once you start using "high mileage" oil there is no going back.

That is quite different that paying a premium price for something like a high end synthetic.

    I said no such thing.
"High mileage" oils are generally not considered to be "premium" oils.
A "specialty" oil would be more accurate.

You are twisting what I said.

I think it is a waste of money to pay extra for something like that.......with an old car with high mileage.
Are you planning to leave it in there for 20,000 miles ?

If not, it probably is a waste of money even in a new car.
But that is your choice; waste your money however you please.

I personally don't buy most of the claims of oil life beyond the car makers recommendations.
    Just not worth the risk.

As an example, our daughter's Pilot calls for 5W20. I'm getting bulk liters of Toyota 5W20 (conventional oil) for $2.80 CDN.

Actually when I lived in CA which was most of my adult life, it never occurred to me to shop at Walmart. Now that I am living in the Southwest, I finally realized what I had been missing...

It's been decades since I bought oil in 1 quart bottles here in US. Walmart has been carrying 5 quart bottles since the early 90's. That is what I buy, a 5 quart bottle. I "recycle" the bottle (quotes are because I go through the motions of recycling, but not sure what actually happens to the stuff I put into the recycle bin) afterwards. I would love to buy in bulk and skip the "recycling" of the bottle, but still, buying one 5qt bottle vs. 5 1 qt bottles is a big savings on packaging.

As for what kind of oil to put in, that is the argument that has been going on ever since oil was first marketed, most likely. Put in whatever makes you happy as long as you put something in and keep an eye on the level. The difference in brands is probably so minor that it's not worth thinking about.

Having said that, I started buying full synthetic for the Prius. I never ever used synthetic oil for any of my vehicles (I've owned, operated and maintained vehicles since 1981). I also went to 10K mile OCI, which pretty much makes the difference between dino oil (at 5K miles) and synthetic (at 10K) cost the same. I also switched to high mileage flavor and have noticed a marked reduction in oil consumption. I don't mind staying with high mileage flavor for ever since it costs the same. I buy Mobile 1 5W30, as recommended by Toyota for my car, at Walmart and don't really think about it. I also use Toyota oil filter I buy on amazon. That also takes the guess work out of the other rabbit hole that is oil filters.

Yes, I am going to switch the 2007 at the next oil change to see what effect that has on oil consumption. I’m with you regarding the concept that the price is the same so what is the big deal about using the high mileage “flavor”.

Motor oil contaminated bottles are likely not acceptable in your recycle bin, and probably are ending up in the dump (aka landfill ). I've listened to a cbc radio interview with a recycler, who shredded the bottles and then used used steam and centrifuges separate the oil. Insanely involved.

I really hope they outlaw these single use motor oil bottles, go to bulk-only, bring-your-own-bottle. Kinda like bottled water dispensers in supermarkets. It'll take legislation I suppose.

I talked to the Service Manager at my nearby Toyota Dealership (Open Road Toyota, Port Moody), and they allow me to buy bulk. I'm currently paying $4.90 (CDN( per liter for Toyota 0W20 synth (for our Prius and son's CX-5), and $2.80 per liter for Toyota 5W20 conventional (for daughter's Pilot). I bring in a 10 liter gas can, fill-er-up, quick and easy.

I don't have stock in WalMart, but I generally recommend one of the brands that they carry because (a) they're good enough (b) they're generally less expensive than dealer brands or some place like Pep Boyz, and (c) because many if not most people already shop there. and it's simply more 'efficient' to get multiple items from one place.
This strategery would also apply to Amazon, Target (for as long as they remain open) and other places like those who are fortunate enough to live where they have a Rural King.
(If they don't have it.....I don't NEED it!)

Almost everybody that I know on the left coast says that they never shop at Walmart, and they make the same scrunchy face - but curiously the stores are as crowded out there as they are elsewhere.
    What's a recycle bin? ;)
Actually with oil threatening to dip below $40 a barrel (Dec 2018 spot price) I'd be very surprised if the recyclers in my area still bother to process plastic. I suspect that instead they just put collected plastics into the landfill.
Some day perhaps they will outlaw single use plastic petroleum containers north of 49, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen down here....and it's a self solving problem these days anyway.
Cars are using a 10,000-15,000 OCI these days, relatively fewer people are bothering to change their own oil, and the EVangelical clique are all carrying placards prognosticating that the end of the ICE is near....

I'm not holding my breath either, just voting with my actions. (y)

I was at the service counter with my 10 liters of fresh vintage, bubbles still floating up. The service writer looked at it, said "You know, this is the way to go.".

Here's something on used motor oil bottle recycling:

    Motor Oil Container Reycling

Still, a massive effort, that could be put out to pasture, by just banning bottled oil, coupled with introduction of bulk oil dispensing facilities. Maybe at gas stations?

I find that our regional super/hypermarket chain often has oil cheaper than AutoZone/Advance Auto Parts -- but they quit selling Castrol a while back. They still have Mobil 1, Valvoline, and Quaker State, plus "store brand"; maybe I've missed one or two as well.

When people say "bulk" oil, is the brand specified, or is it "this is what we got a good deal on this month, and we won't tell you where it came from" oil?

I put used oil bottle/jugs in the bin at AutoZone. What they do with them is up to them.

My bulk oil is Toyota brand, mostly 0W20 synth, some 5W20 conventional. It is the customer's insistance that the only reliable, identifiable oil comes in bottles, that creates this mountain of empties.

The 5 quart bottles cost less than the 1 quart bottles, by a quart.
I have a 1 quart bottle in the trunk, just in case. And I use that quart when I change the oil so it
won't get old from being open.

*"I really hope they outlaw these single use motor oil bottles, go to bulk-only, bring-your-own-bottle. Kinda like bottled water dispensers in supermarkets"*

The government doesn't need to get involved in ANYTHING else! Have they not screwed up enough???
All the dispensers in the stores are just city water with a filter. How good is that filter? What month did they last change it????

What a pain it would be to have to go wait in line with that oily containers you lugged around in your car all week waiting
to get oil. And what kind is it???? How many different brands of oil are there? How many vicosities(spelling?)?
WHERE are they going to keep all that oil? What a mess.
It will be one huge drum with one line split into 10.

This filter is also stocked in most Autozone stores, as of the first week of November for mine.

Adding a couple of new brands of oil here in the next couple of weeks too. Just recently started carrying the Mobil 0W-16. It literally sounds like shaking up a water bottle.
