There's a ton of noise on the 12 volt line which interferes with the IC and locks them up without the Caps working to filter out the noise.

I had the exact same issue. I left my 2007 Prius with the head light on and it was draining it down to 8V. It was a 5 year old battery. Since it was a 5 year old battery, I was saying myself it is time to change it. A few week before, my CM was showing random behavior that require a reset time to time. After the battery change, the CM is not displaying any information and my car is more difficult to switch off. I found a 2004 CM at a local pull a part and replace mine. I will try to fix my cluster soon since the odometer is only 40k vs the 04' 120k.

Weak batteries have more resistance so less noise more noise the more ripple you have on your 12v line

I believe people posting that it is a CM problem. I am not so sure it is a coincidence that it happened after battery replaced. I just had the same experience. 12V battery was failing on my 2005 Prius, put in a new battery, and next time I went to use the car dashboard was dark. I was talking to a friend who also owns a Prius and same thing happened to him. Too many coincidences.

maybe the voltage surge is the final straw for the bad solder joint

Voltage spikes on disconnect/reconnect do happen. But I've read that it's a capacitor in the CM that fails.

Good job!! That makes sense, but I really couldn't come up with it. If you were old enough, I'd guess you worked on breaking the Enigma Code in WWII. :D

I'm an electronics engineer and an industrial electrician. I'm pretty sure I know what a capacitor is. My quandary had nothing to do with technology. If you'd written the other post as clearly as this one, everyone could have read it effortlessly. I doubt if I was the only one struggling to decipher it. But I was the only one who cared enough to ask for a translation.

I'm not trying to insult. We all make typos. But a little time in proof reading saves a lot of time for your readers.

They use fish oil? I thought they used an electrolytic compound?

Interesting but does not answer my question about fish oil though. And to think all that wasted electronic equipment to save in many cases less than a penny per unit.

I didn't design it I'm just telling you that the pastor smell like fish oil soon as you heat it capacitor when the capacitors are bad leaking and that's what fails on those boards

    Thanks again everybody.

I did the replacement last night with a refurbished combination meter from Matt at Texas Hybrid (and the help of YouTube). Not bad at all. Less than 2 hours.

The only hangup was the inner driver’s side air vent. The top was so brittle it basically disintegrated down to the top of the vent itself. Still locks in place and is functional but looks like poop.

    Cheers!

That happened to me as well when I replaced the CM on my 2007 last year; I bought a new part from a Toyota dealer via web order.

Ditto. Replaced 12v battery and sure enough the combination meter doesn't work anymore. Reset it by unplugging and plugging in white connector to 12v battery. If the car is left alone for less than 10 hours the combination meter works fine, but over that amount and it's dead the next time I start the car. None of the button pushing tricks worked for me, only unplugging and plugging white connector on battery.
