Welp, another accident where someone was getting out of her car via the passenger side from the drivers side because the driver side door didn't work, she was trying to get the lift gate of the apartment complex to open by entering the apartment number on the keypad, she failed to do that, gets back into her car via the passenger side door maneuvers to the drivers side and accidentally shifts the car into neutral thereby her car rolls backwards into my car, there were cars behind me so, smash bang 20190102_134010.jpeg

I was walking the dog, idly thinking "Toyota should get together with Jeep, make iteration of Prius that can take a slight tap."

It's no big secret: don't festoon the front (or rear) with chandeliers.

    Golly!!!

Amazon says this won't fit my car, but as they say, where there's a will, there's a relative.

Wow, just a small tap can do this damage. The entire front assembly will be replaced. Can you please update us with the total cost of the bumper replacement, as I think most of us will go through it at some point in future.

The whole panel is $468 (which is ridiculous). The Toyota emblem not so much?

It just pisses me off to hear these pieces of plastic dreck referred to as "bumpers". Or to hear statements like "I need some protection for my bumper".

Rant on: "the thing is supposed to BE the bumper, fer chrisakes".

Mendel, That whole progressive body crunch system is for our safety, it starts with the bumbers!
Underneath is a very thick and real steel bar which probably also has some predicated crunchability.
Altho we Seniors may not like or agree with it, I’m sure numerous lives have been saved because of it.
Plus it increases insurance, promotes body shop profits and in general makes everything cost a lot more!
That’s the American way, right ? Just make sure YOU are not at fault. Andy

Check out some of the OLD vs NEW crash tests:

AND - if you think Steel Bumpers would have helped:

The other thing not mentioned in the tests above is that in a 2016 -> PRIUS the AEB would have triggered, meaning that it would have likely slowed dramatically before hitting, lessening the impact. Thanks, RADAR detector and Camera.

They should make the crumple zones cheap and utilitarian. The current front ends are first and foremost styling exercises, very fragile and expensive ones.

Also recess the license plates, to avoid even the slightest love tap embossing the car ahead with the license plate mounting bolts.

They did back in the late '70s - remember the ugly crash bumpers
    upload_2019-1-16_13-44-57.png upload_2019-1-16_13-47-0.png upload_2019-1-16_13-47-46.png

But, while they were able to take impacts up to 5mph (?), they found that the damage at just slightly more than that was more costly. And - it had to be hit at the "correct" height, and straight on - if slightly higher or at an angle, the damage could be more costly.

At the same time, manufacturers, particularly VOLVO, MERC et al were trying to build in better and better crumple zones. And the 2 didn't work together seamlessly, which I believe is why they dropped the 5mph bumpers - and try to save lives instead.

IIRC, Ford had bumpers filled with water to absorb impacts. They had plugs that would pop out to let the water out.
