Looking at getting my first Prius. It’s a 2013 one owner with 86k miles. An older man used it for his long commute to work but is now retired. He has service records but it seems he only got it serviced (oil change and inspections) every 10-12k miles. I feel like it should be done way before that?

Also, is it important that I get it inspected at a dealer? I’ve always done all my inspections when buying a used car and have never had issues or made a bad purchase. But I’ve never bought a hybrid.

Any input will be great! Thanks!

Were the oil changes with synthetic oil? I have always did my inspections also and have had good luck myself. I did my Prius inspection myself and got lucky again, but there are things I had no idea about that have bitten others in the behind. The one owner and commuter car are good signs but why is he selling it now? If there is an independent hybrid repair shop with a good rep near you it might be a good idea to have them look at things you might not even think of.

    welcome!

    good buy, or goodby?

great car if you can get it for the right price. shrive every 10-12 is fine for the first 100k, it is only oil and filters plus tire rotations which don't matter on a used car.

if you buy it, we'll have a few inexpensive recommendations.

    all the best!(y)

He said since he’s retired, he doesn’t drive very long distances and is wanting to use the money for a camper.

The oil changes were done at a Toyota dealership, they would use the right oil...right?

This will probably be a good buy, mileage is low and 1 owner.

You would have to do a little maintenance once you get it, but it's going to be very minor until you get to around 120k miles.

Now you’ve done it. Your gonna get an earful about oil now. The camper thing Sounds like a reasonable answer.

I’ll try to see if I can take it to a mechanic. It’s 8 hours away from where I live (northern Indiana) but I’m tired of dealing with rust when I buy used cars. Plus I can’t really find a Prius in my area

if you take it to a dealer or mechanic, don't listen to any nonsense about brake pad thickness, struts, tires and etc.
price is excellent. have you run a carfax for accident reports?

Struts and tires do add up and he might be able to get the price down based on that.

Your daughter is selling hers and wants the most money for it. He is buying one and wants to pay the least money for it. You do understand the difference, don’t you?
