What made you pick the V over other Pri?

In a typical year I eat less than one slice of cheesecake, however, driving 2 hours in the car with cheesecake smells, that was hard. I should have turned the A/C to max.

 

My personal admission is I remember being on this site when video of the introduction of the Prius v was released. From that introduction to the discontinuing of the model, I don't think I ever quite got exactly what audience Toyota was aiming for with the Prius v.

It seemed cursed by a mediocrity of nearly everything it was striving to be.

Obviously the difference is size and hauling capacity. But it never seemed like THAT much of an advantage. At the time, I owned my standard Prius, and my feeling was I was fine for day to day, and if on a trip that required more hauling/storage space, I could probably equal the functionality of the Prius v, with a roof rack compartment. Much of the advantage of a Prius v, I thought could be equaled by bike racks, or other add-on's if needed. It never was a product that interested me.

Also I could never get past the MPG, which while yes, very good for a vehicle of it's size, was the worst MPG for a product labeled Prius.

Please don't be too upset owner of the Prius v. It's a great product if you want it.
But with Prius?
I really value the gas mileage and efficiency.
I was disappointed that the Prius c, didn't get better MPG than it does. I was hoping smaller, would be significantly better. And really? It's about a draw.
Larger getting less MPG, just didn't compute with me.
I had spent a lot of time at Prius Chat..and I really didn't hear a lot of calls for a "Larger Prius".

In the case of the Prius v? I really think Toyota might of been better served going with slightly different styling ques, and simply releasing it as something else, not even called a Prius. I never thought it compared well enough to it's own namesake brethren. My expectations with anything labeled Prius, is that as a pure hybrid, it's going to at least reach the benchmark of a advertiseable . 50 mpg. Admittedly anything called Prius that doesn't at least initially reach that mark is for me? Going to be an anemic choice.

I think Toyota has somewhat come to the same conclusion, with the discontinuing of the Prius v, and the reduction of the "Prius Family".

I'm really intrigued with the Corolla Hybrid Hatch-Back, obviously NOT being released as some version labeled "Prius".

 

My wife has a 5 person sedan that she likes. I needed to take a 6 foot xmas tree to the dump, a load of trash and recycling to the dump, a load of yard waste to a recycling station, 2 kids and wife and all the beach stuff (rafts, umbrellas, chairs, games, luggage) to the beach. My prior cars got around 25 on the road and one required premium. Every car is a compromise. There wasn't a lo load height wagon available that had as much utility and got better mileage at the time. My daughter in law bought one after seeing mine. They also have a Prius hatchback. When 5 of them come to my house, they use the v. The hatch is a commuter car with 200k+ miles on it. Great for what it does. The v has met my expectations and exceeded them in some areas. I didn't have 50MPG expectations as it was both bigger and heavier.

I see dozens in my neighborhood and don't see a lot of them being traded in. So must be meeting someone's expectations.

 

Change the names, examples and distances, and the outcome is the same. Hope we can find another one when the time comes.

The Trunk space...for all my golfing lingerie's..and i have a thing for station wagons. Plus saving money on gas, it is just a no brain-er!!

 

I know that owners and "supporters" of the Prius v exist. I did not mean to upset or insult those that have purchased the vehicle and enjoy it.
I know it does meet some peoples expectations.
My only argument is that since Toyota has discontinued production, it evidently didn't meet the expectations of enough people.

 

Or it may be that Toyota sees higher margins in other vehicle lines, and chose not to update the v.

 

it's funny, i am not a V owner. I own a Honda crv. My wife has a 2013 prius gen 3. But I really can't get over how practical her vehicle is. To have that much room, even in the backseat and the cargo hold is really incredible. She still gets 45 mpg in the freezing MN winter with heat blasting constantly. There really isn't another vehicle that can compete with it. I've been saying this since 2012 when we got it.

 

We have a CR-V as well as a v. They each do different things well, but on anything other than very short trips, it is tough to ignore the 2+ times CR-V MPG of the v.

my cr-v in winter with heat blasting gets 23-24 mpg. normally, I get 26-28 with a/c or windows fall, spring and summer. it's not terrible for awd and the size. I wonder how cargo capacity compares V to cr-v. I have a 2016 model.

 

Yes. v at 40-42 mpg vs. 18-20 mpg CR-V.

 

what year is your crv? Like i said, i typically am closer to mid 20s and in nicer weather, closer to 30.

oh, now i see. that is a smaller vehicle than my 2016. maybe more comparable to the V.

 

My measurements (unscientific, sticking a golf club in each) say the v and Rav4 are comparable. As to the Prius hatchback, try lifting a tour golf bag over the lip and into the trunk. Or fitting a completely full lawn plastic bag for transport to the dump. The first doesn't happen with this 75 year old back, the second just doesn't happen. These aren't abnormal trips for me, I'd say one or the other every week. So I'm willing to get less MPG for utility/useability. And I may go RV4h for the seat height. The hatch and wagon aren't the same size interior either. Which is why the v fits 5 for a 50 mile trip and the hatch gets left at home.

Different cars, different needs.

So why isn't the v continued? Why didn't it sell more? What publicity did it get? If you are coming with a hybrid CRV competitor, do you need two vehicles in essentially the same space? Is ~10% MPG difference enough to sell against the CRVh or Rav4h?

The most erudite comment that I have seen to date about why a plugin is not the perfect answer for everyone. Most of us have a tendency to extrapolate our situation to any given comment, disregarding the fact that there are other ways of life than our own.

 

i had 2008 A3 (just too small), 2013 CRV, 2012 Q5, 2013 Civic before i switched to the Prius V. only 2 of those cars (Civic and the Prius V) was able to fit 4 golf bags (1 tour bag, 3 x stand bags) and still fit 4 adults. only the prius V can offer 40 to 42 mpg. Prius V have save me the MOST money on fuel cost in the 1st year of ownership. (given you get pass the look of it)
