After bumping my price again, I found three cars that I’m looking at. I saw all three in person and we’re fine but I’m not sure which to go with.

The first is a 2011 Four with solar , 83K with a little front bumper rash on bottom. I got them down to 8900 OTD.
Used 2011 Toyota Prius For Sale in Limerick, PA | VIN# JTDKN3DU0B0319863

The second is a 2012 Three with solar, 80K no damage anywhere for 10,900 OTD.
Toyota Prius 2012 in Middletown, Waterbury, Hartford, New Haven | CT | Newfield Auto Sales | 606737

The third is a 2012 Four with solar and HUD, 63K no damage for 13K OTD.
2012 Toyota PRIUS 4 city PA Carmix Auto Sales

Is the 2012 really worth 2-5k more? All cars mechanically were fine. The 2011 just needs fuel efficient tires.

If you don't mind the 2011 styling, then it's basically the same car as the 2012

I heard there were more oil issues and body squeaks with the 10-11 is that so?

Thats just because they are older and have more miles ;).

Nothing about the engine design or components changed until 2014, and @Mendel Leisk has an excel chart showing the differences between the pre-2014 and post-2014 changes.

If all things are equal (and they are all coming from salty environments), I’d go for option 2. Just seems like the best deal to me :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Yeah, in a nutshell: 2014 revised the piston, and 2015 has that revised piston plus revised piston rings. Both revisions apparently with the aim to reduce oil consumption problems. It'd be very interesting to see a John Kelly style review of the two styles, what the differences are.

You got time in your hands:p.

Northern California is nice this time of year and if we get a block, I’m sure @NutzAboutBolts would provide videography :).

Based on your backup cam shot, you seem photogenic;).

Good use of your spare time(y).

I would go with 2012 and up, 2011 still has the 2010 compartment design, the 2012 went away with certain items in the engine bay like the coolant bleeder valve up top.

If you don’t mind the nav system then option 2 is best. But if you want a nav system then option 3 is better. The reason why option 3 is a little more expensive is because of the HUB. The front mirror is a different material than the non HUB since it require a special mirror for it. I recently replaced my front mirror replaced because of a crack and my mirror was HUB so they had to special order it and it was 1$k more expensive than the non HUB mirrors. Plus, out of all 3 vehicles, option 3 has the lowest miles so it’ll be more expensive. Hope that helps narrow down your thoughts.

Thanks. I don’t care about nav since the radio is the first thing coming out to put CarPlay in. Been obsessed with your videos. They’re going to help me immensely. Thank you.

You should check KBB value on the vehicle. I just checked option 2 and it’s around 7-9300$ for excellent condition.

Ouch. Have you tried craigslist? Maybe that’ll be another option :)

For not much more than option 3, you can get a brand new prime plus on the east coast;).

    That’s what I’d do if I was looking for a different ride(y).

I’ve tried cargurus, Craigslist, eBay, Autotrader, cars.com and TrueCar. Low mileage white with solar is hard to find. I originally wanted a gen ii under 7k. Then longevity and maintenance and style made me go gen iii. I always wanted the solar package in my previous two priuses (had a 12 and 15 V wagon so I want to get it now. I don’t want to go much over 10k with under 90k miles.

I respect what a person whats in their vehicles, but you might consider finding one without the solar option as this will give you more choices. All it does is pre-exhaust air from the cabin. I live in Texas where it gets a lot hotter than Wayne NJ and have not seen that option viable, but YMMV. When you strip all the bells and whistles...it's still the same car. Plus...you already mentioned replacing the sound system so I would suggest buying model down. On my first I bought a Level II (2) and did my own thing.

What ever you find and/or decide on best wishes.

Yep, the solar option is what’s making the vehicle more expensive, and it’s pretty much useless. I live in California and I’ve never needed to use it and when I did, I didn’t feel it made any difference.

Yep, the sunroof is what’s expensive lol... I don’t think there’s a sunroof without the solar package.

Sunroofs are nice, but they are just another overpriced mfg/regional upgrade that most people never use...in real life. ;)
