I assume he needs this car, I would put a used one in it and then play with the old one if he had the time and then see what it would cost for the repairs. Parts may be more than a used unit.

Toyota list is over $500 for the mainshaft and $900 for the damper. Looks like it might be eBay time.

I'll try to buy a used trans and explore my options with a damp. Maybe there is an aftermarket option.

That's high? I saw something like 380 for the shaft and maybe 250 for damper IIRC, on McGeorge Toyota site. Just on my phone now, hard to check.

That's with those part no's I posted above: are they maybe incorrect no's?

I would double check engine, borescope camera thru the spark plug holes to make sure there wasn’t some kind of internal engine failure. As he says in that video, MG2 has an output of 153 ft lbs multiplied by the gear reduction of 2.65 (405.65). That amount of torque is going to break something. Hopefully it was a rare manufacturing defect in that shaft, and not a sign of a larger failure actually inside the engine itself.

It seems as though the springs from the damper got caught and stopped it from spinning. I've wanted to buy a scope do maybe i will. It turns nicely though and seems to have good compression. Toyota records say there was a rattle back in the day and claimed it to be heat shield. It was more than likely a spring failure. Previous owner also complained about a wobble while accelerating. All makes sense to me

Too bad the Gen 4 damper and flywheel don't fit. I have one from my engine swap that I would give you. That would solve 2/3 of the issue. There is still the issue of repair the transaxle or replace. This is the price from a local-to-me Toyota dealer on the damper.

How much for a complete, used transmission from a salvage yard?

The transaxles are cheap, $200-300 thru LKQ. They are cheap and plentiful due to the lack of recorded failures.

I would replace the whole thing. Individual parts seem to be more than a complete transmission and should be easier than repairing the transmission.

Turn the engine over (with wrench on the pulley nut), maybe removing spark plugs first (if not done already), and see how easy it turns and if it sounds ok.

Trans has 55k miles on it. Junk yard says they recommend a fluid flush on every trans. What do you guys think.

Used damper was 75$ hope it works ok .

Definitely change the fluid. It's easy and cheap to do.
    It certainly can't hurt!

Fill the transaxle, drive for a few days, drain and refill. You'll need to purchase 4 quarts Toyota ATF WS. The Owner's Manual cautions against using anything else. Also, I've found a Toyota publication that says not to save unused, always use a freshly opened bottle. Still, for a few days, I think it'd be good. Up here the bottles are liters, for $9.14 (CDN) per, last time.

I've found the simplest way to fill is with a funnel and hose extension, about 3 foot. Keep the outside diameter of the hose around 1/2" OD max, and it should fit ok in the fill hole. Do the fill with the car raised and level: the level is correct when it starts coming back out. You can pour in the first 3 quarts without worry, then go slow; it'll take around 3.5 qts in total, maybe a bit more.

Torque for fill and drain bolts is 29 ft/lb. They're socket-head cap-screws, with 10mm hex recess. A long-handled wrench is good for breaking them loose, if you don't have an impact driver. Always remove the fill bolt first, just in case...

The washer part number, if you're replacing, is 90430-18008. Last time they cost me $3.80 (CDN) apiece, robbery...

I’d think the trans would be pretty easy to remove without the engine in place. Other then the inverter being in the way
