I believe that if you speak with McLaren Special Operations (their custom auto division), they will tell you: with enough money anything is possible.

Hey, I believe it. I've seen it here, and at other automotive websites. Sometimes it's not even about money, it's simply skill and effort and time.
I've seen people execute some amazing projects.

Since I'm maxing out in vehicle adaptation when I slip my steering wheel cover on? I'm routinely impressed.

It has been done, but everything was hand crafted. There is no kit. Safety will depend on your skill

    I do not recommend it.

As above, all custom from what I've seen. Also, you say 1.8? This is the Gen 2 forum (1.5), maybe if you ask in another forum for your your car you may get more help.

WOW. ... For a while in my much younger years I built and raced cars. We played in both the speed and mileage leagues. I'm just giving my opinion here and I'm not really making a wisecrack. The Prius wasn't really built for turbo or super chargers. Neither technology is new or all that complicated. The Toyota engineers are pretty bright guys. I'm sure that if it was a good idea they would have gone for it. If it would really work I'm also sure that a number of aftermarket companies would pump out all kinds of stuff. This is a case where I would suggest staying in your lane.

    ... But I'm just sayin'.

I think the answer is yes, you can install a turbo. But it won't produce any more power. The electronic control of air/fuel mixture and blending gas vs electric power are designed without a turbo in mind. To get more power with a turbo, the computer controls have to be aware of the turbo.

I'd say that maybe he can try something like an external ECU like a MoTeC that a lot of race teams run, but that's likely to cost as much as his car. Also, I'm not sure there's any ECUs that can run the HSD.

There's a guy around my area with a beautiful Starlet with a 3S-GTE (and a big turbo) dropped into it. The car sounds glorious.

That's sounds like a great setup. You like racing the old school cars?

I count myself as a member of the JDM/stance crowd. It's clearly not everyone's cup of tea, but I appreciate the extent that people go to in modding their cars, even if it is just to get Instagram-famous.

That said, I do appreciate a lot of vintage JDM. I have an acquaintance who has an amazing Hakosuka GT-R; probably why he had it displayed at SEMA. I'd prefer a 90s Cressida with a 1UZ dropped into it, but I think maybe my impressions of that car are tinted by all the times I rode to school in the back seat of one with a very pretty neighbor whose parents we carpooled with.

I should mention that dropping a turbo on the Atkinson cycle engine makes something like a Miller cycle engine, which was found on the Mazda Millenia.

I am interested in knowing and learning more on the newer ones like what you're involve in. The technologies I know was all in 1969 to the Cressida era you mentioned. The 91 was an import car in the US. I worked on a lot of older Cressida's but that was 7mge if I remember. I am actually thrilled that a lot of people are getting into it now and the technology is getting more and more available nowadays. I remember walking into a car lot back in 1986 when the first MR2 came out. 95% in the customer parking lot was not even japanese cars.
Hit me up on the Mazda. what is this setup?
PS the video I posted was one of my friend John Muir. He's famous race car driver the power starlet guy and I believe his starlet is in Portland Convention now. Less than 4 months ago he bought my old fiat took it home to Scotland. Pretty sure he's goona do something wonderful with that car!

Yes, the Cressida I'm familiar with had the 3L 7M-GE. If Jalopnik is right, there is apparently one languishing in a Colorado junkyard. Unfortunately, refurbishing that car is way beyond my meager automotive skillset.

Surely you have to know about the huge community centered around the hachiroku and the 4A-GE (some of which were built into serious-business, 11k-rpm-redline Formula Atlantic trim)? A late-90s Japanese manga-then-anime series named Initial D about mountain pass drift racing (i.e. Touge) essentially made the car famous. There are 6 seasons of this show, which is fun to watch if you like 90s JDM cars (and Eurobeat music). It's on Youtube. This mythology continues to inflate market prices of these cars today (it's called the Takumi tax for good reason).

I think the Mazda Millennia is relevant to this thread. It was the world's first production car with a Miller cycle engine, which basically combines an Atkinson-like valve timing with a supercharger to increase efficiency. That's basically what all the people who want to stick a turbo to the Prius are asking for. Again, this is probably not at all controllable by the Prius stock ECU. This thread really should be in the modifications section and not the audio/electronics one.

Interesting.. Besides the Prius I bought recently as an everyday gas saver, Nowadays I'm barely turning screws pretty much on old classic cars. And one of the last classic car that I worked on was my '57 100/6 Austin Healey. When I ordered the exhaust system, I wanted to get all original but its very hard to get the old British Peco exhaust for this car. I ended up getting the bell and the guy didn't tell me its was oversized. When I installed the exhaust it feels like the car was going airborne and like I swallowed a cookie from the matrix movie. What I'm trying to say is I think you got me all excited again.
I have been reading this engine that you linked and I guess its still available. Don't get me wrong, I love the 4ag, 3tg, 13tg 18rgs (early) I worked on a lot of these engines for a very long time but it just gotten too popular and the price became so outrageous.
I wanna start learning more on something fresh like the mazda engine you mentioned.
What would be the right body for this engine for a 4-cyl. pace car?
PS. recently I sold 3 of my cars for I promise my wife I wanna stay with the classics. She's not gonna like this one.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking for, and I'd hesitate to call that engine "fresh" (I would probably reserve that for the new turbo gasoline direct injection engines and Mazda's new partial-HCCI engine).

You can get a general idea of what the engine will cost you searching on car-part.com. It looks like you might be able to pick up a junkyard 2002 (last year they were produced) Millennia for about $1000 that needs substantial work. Engines seem to go for $300-$800. Good luck, working on that car will likely be an uphill climb because it's so unique and has been out of production for so long.

The millennia is a 4 door front wheel drive.. I thought you were thinking about using a different car like a rear wheel drive and dropping that engine.
Actually there's a lot of those cars here in Oregon pretty reasonable deal.

There are so many good early bodies you can use for a pace car. Like the early colt galants they have a very light body, very well balanced and they are excellent on slaloms and even balletic driving. the original 4G32 was a very good engine but the problem is finding the parts now are impossible. You drop that mazda engine 200hp that car will fly.

You'll have to be the one to make that information video, because no one else has yet done so.
