I try to stay up on recalls but debating whether to act on this one or not. I haven't heard much about it in the news and I already have 215K miles on my 2010 IV with no issues so why bother?

Because if you DON’T get the recall done, your Prius will shut off completely when the software detects an issue. Your car will have no power steering and no way to move at all if the defect occurs.

From the recall mailing in red letters "while power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash"

Mechanical steering and braking. No power assist. Have you tried turning your steering wheel with the car NOT in ready mode?

There's more information here, including the PDF of the official announcement. It does clearly say "While power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash. " It does not say mechanical steering or braking only, or that the steering or braking assist would be impaired. What shuts down is the power train.

I thought one of the letters said that “while steering and braking would still be available, the effort to steer or stop the car could be greater then normal” or something along those lines.

I called my local dealer today and they are not aware the repair is available, and would get back to me.

For myself, the question becomes......why not get it done? .......it's free, & a bunch of Toyota engineers (far smarter than I) are telling me it's a good idea to get it completed.......

funny you mention this, I didn't see a recall notice in the mail but the Hybrid System Software went out on Sunday. (2.10.19)
the car ran but low power, as I was only about 2 miles from the dealer where I bought it, was able to get it there and dropped off.
They called me and let me know its recalled, and had it out the door yesterday with the new whatever and I was back in business, no charge.
IMO worth it, I've heard the car can completely stop running, a situation I'd rather avoid._Bab

i had to smirk when I read post #2, as though it's a 100% certainty right here & right now - that disaster will positively certainly hit, as opposed to maybe a one in a thousand chance, as a worst case scenario. Even a one in 10,000 chance though will get a recall, & and rightly so.
Just get it done, and don't think or worry that your hair is going to catch on fire.

i'm going to wait until there aren't any more recalls, and get them all done in the same trip. that saves gas (y)

Mine is done. Less than an hour this morning...and the car sat for 30 minutes before being moved to have the update performed.

I did it before three weeks at my local Toyota dealer and it took them less than an hour with free remedies.
The question is that, I have issues with the temporary less than a second knocking still going on in the engine when it’s switching from hybrid mode to regular engine mode?

Not gonna lie to you but when I did this recall. I noticed a reduction in power and acceleration. If you do it, i'd suggest you get a service right after. I would do an oil change, transmission fluid drain and refill, tire rotation, and that's it.

Had your car had E0E previously done? If so, was it done completely, or one of the 36,000 that were done incompletely? Can you report the firmware versions you were running before going in for this update?

How would doing an oil change, transmission fluid drain and refill, and tire rotation bring the power back?

    You never know lol.

Not sure, but it might slightly easier to slip into electric-only, post update. That definitely was the case after the first update, and it feels like slightly more again. Maybe.
