It’s illegal for a code scanner to be able to erase trouble codes at auto parts stores in California. The stores that have them here have special ones that don’t have a reset button. I know the OP is in a different state, just wanted to clarify in case someone reads this at a future date.

Toyota claimed they couldn't clear the codes. I got so fed up with them I talked to the service manager again and told them his techs were clueless. I have a scan tool coming in the mail tomorrow that I'll use to clear out my codes. When I took after spending the 1500 and they claimed the only thing wrong was the hybrid battery I got them to give me the codes. The code related to the brakes it was throwing is C1391. Looks like I might be replacing the brake actuator soon if the code comes back after I clear them out. I found a local mechanic who will do the work. Trying to stay away from that dealership as much as possible.

It's a "legal" thing. They should have told you they cannot just "clear a code" that has anything to do with a safety function. The vehicle must be inspected for any failure first. I've been told this by my son and my brother who are both master techs.

They sent me away telling me my brakes are fine when they definitely aren't. I don't think they care about liability.

The brake actuator code is caused by the bad battrery module often! this happened to me a few months ago, I had probably one bad module in my hybrid pack and thought i needed a new invertor and possible new braking system cause of all the wacked out codes your car will send when the battery goes bad, i was trying to explain this in my previous post, but most cars do this now, vw are awful for insane amounts of codes caused by something that makes no sense when its something not that closely related to the code that is the problem., I changed my 12v and battery pack at the same time, my bad 12v battery was, I suspect, killing my hybrid battery too. SPARK PLUGS IS A GREAT IDEA. I hate how prius owners think theyre never gonna have to change their spark plugs, it's wasted electricity when theyre old, eating away at your battery life.. The difference is between you and me, I problem solved the issue myself by reading posts online and my auto zone code scanner, you freaked out and spend 1500 at the dealer on nothing, just sayin.. every code has 5 -10 possible causes, so you have to get a group of codes to in a row to try to pinpoint the cause, kind of like playing slots. California is a stupid place to try to exist, stupid laws written by people who think they know everything. republicans and democrats cause this, btw.

They still stand by my hybrid ECU was bad. I even talked to the head manager over the place. I find it hard to believe the Hybrid ECU, brake actuator, and battery cell all went bad the same week, but it is what it is. I have techstream now so no autozone for me.

If you paid with a credit card, dispute it. Tell them the problem was not fixed and they didn't actually do anything but take your money

post bad reviews and get your money back, those people should get a real job, scamming people isnt a job, its being a jerk. file a lawsuit, I would threaten them with one for sure. People that work at car delerships are incapable of being moral humans too often. this is why i find non dealer mechanics that specialize in my cars. you should go there and picket till they pay you your money back. I am in a union. you gotta fight fire with fire. this is how we do it. call them up and threaten to picket them on saturdays if they dont refund you. i bet just the threat will get your money back. picketing is legal. Thats not extortion. what they did to you is extortion.

Resetting the code is part of the troubleshooting and repair. How will you know if you fixed it if you don't clear the code.
Sounds like a catch 22 to me.
