Prime Premium aftermarket rims

    What would be the best 17 inch rim dimensions, manufacturer and model that I could buy for a Prius Prime Premium that I’m about to pick up. I’m going to put winter tires on the original rims and hubcaps.

    Then I’m going to swap the factory all season tires on to the new rims. I’m looking for something along the lines of a matte gray and something strong so that when I drive over potholes the rim doesn’t bend which I read a lot of people had issues with when they bought a lower quality rim.

    Is this a good idea especially won the car is brand new and with warranty claims in the future the dealership could always point to finger at the aftermarket rims etc. if something goes wrong in that area?

    17" rims in general are going to be more damage prone, since you'll be using them with a low-profile tire, less able to absorb shocks.

    An alternative might be to keep the vehicle stock, and get extra steel rims for the snow tires. These work:

    Corolla 15" black steel rims p/n: 42611-02471
    With lug nuts p/n: 90942-01007 (utilitarian, open-ended, galvanized)

    What are everyone’s thoughts on Toyota’s alloy rims? A dealer out of state has these on their brand new Prime Advanced.

    From the perspective of someone who considers themselves part of the tuner community, OEM rims are always going to be kind of visually underwhelming and expensive. They will be high quality - better than a number of aftermarket options, but not as good as something like a Volk/RAYS Engineering rim.

    What if I do with 16” Enkei or Niche. I need assistance with sizing, diameter, etc so that I don’t do this the wrong way.

    I like the alloys on the European Prime, which fortunately for us, is coming on the 2019 XLE FWD and Limited models. I prefer those over the accessory rims. They looked good on their own but when mounted on the car, they look aftermarket; not exactly the look you want when you paid OEM prices.

    PIP rims can still be found. One time Toyota managed put a nice-looking, not too flashy uncovered 15" on a Prius. Not really "directional" either, ie: they look good on either side.

    Those would’ve worked nicely on my Prime as winters!

    I found the Prime’s stock rims heavier than the Gen 3s.

    @Rob43 can you chime in. I read your thread in the sticky, but I wanted to ask about your thoughts on rims/tires. What has maybe worked out for someone like in my case? I can keep the stock rims/hubcaps, but I’ll have to always balance them with the winter tires I’m going to get. This is why I’d rather get sportier matte gray rims for summer an solace the factory in them. Then come winter get Blizzaks and add them to the factory rims/tires.

    Your thread spoke about weight, diameter, etc...it got a little confusing was all.

    If you go with a larger rim, you just go with a narrower sidewall tire so the overall diameter stays the same..

    This is literally the same thing I did. I have summer tires on an aftermarket set of Volk CE28n rims, and winter tires on my stock rims.

    If the original rims are 15", and the replacements are 17", how will you do this? Or is the new PP going to come from the dealer with 17" wheels?

    My first question is based on all of your current posts:

    Do you live in a city that's "Crazy Bad" with potholes or do you live in an area that's "Medium" (reasonable roads*) in surface conditions?

    SE WI: I would say reasonable. More potholes during the winter (I would have Blizzaks and stock rims/hubcaps) and less during the summer (stock tires and custom rims) and they get patched up.

    So all in all your roads are fairly decent, when there are a few more winter related road issues you'll have your 195/65-15 Blizzaks
    mounted which provide better pothole protection (when compared to 17"), then in the summer you'll have your Plus 2 wheel/tire
    combo.

    In my opinion you make for a good Plus 2 wheel/tire candidate...
