What other cars did you consider besides prime?

2016 Prius hybrid. Didn't like what they did to the rear cargo area and was going to manufacture my own. I decided to wait and see if they fixed it in 2017, which they didn't, so I looked at the Prime and dismissed it because of the raised cargo floor. Then I found that there were some advantages and the idea of a plug-in grew on me so I went and took some measurements and realized the raised floor didn't really matter very much and ordered one. Best decision ever.

 

I looked at the Chevy Volt and C-MAX energi, and the main reason was gas mileage, and hence, range, both the volt and the C-MAX suck when the EV runs out. It's a good thing, both are discontinued now.

The only other car I'd think about now would be a Subaru, and that's just for the fun, not the mileage.

 

I was never in the market when I purchased 2017 PRIME for I was quite happy with less than 3 years old 2015 Gen 3 I was driving then. I just wanted to see and test drive PHV, but ended up with an offer too good to pass. Naturally, I did not do any comparison shopping then. That said, we are considering purchasing another vehicle. For that, Prime, Clarity, Lexus UX hybrid, Outlander PHV, Nero PHV, RAV4 Hybrid, Crosstreck PHV, and all new Leaf plus and Corolla hybrid are all under consideration.

Visited 2 dealership and in both the salespeople all must have had English as
their 2nd or 3rd language. I became frustrated and never test drove one.
I checked in with my long time sales manager and he informed me the Prime was
now mainstream and not limited to the coast locations.
Getting a test drive was another issue but after visiting two other dealerships I
got 2 test drives. Neither was charged enough to do a pure EV test and I was not
aware of Charge Mode at that time.
Based mostly on comments on this forum I purchased a Prime Advance sight
undriven in EV mode.
I think I made a good decision.

Honestly, I guess I could say that I "thought" about a few other hybrids / full electrics for a split second.

But at the end of the day, I already own a Prius v with ~60K that's operated flawlessly, so buying a Prius Prime was a no brainer.

My daily driver was an 09 Miata with 6-speed manual transmission. After a couple of two hour drives in bumper to bumper traffic I decided we needed something with an automatic transmission and more trunk space. The local Toyota dealer didn't have a Prime, but tried to sell me a RAV4 hybrid. I liked the technology, particularly the "birds eye" camera, but felt it was too big for a daily driver. Went online and found a Prime and a used CT200H at two different dealers near Seattle. Drove the Prime, really liked it and bought it on the spot. Never got to see the Lexus. However, my wife is thinking of replacing her Lexus ES300 with one of the UX series.

 

If you go look at new UX250h, will you please let me know how big the cargo space with rear seats folded. The spec is 17.1 cf behind rear seat, which is even smaller than PRIME's 19.8 cf. Considering it is the first and probably only (?) AWD crossover with >40 mpg in city EPA rating, if it has adequate cargo space I am considering it as our second car. But, I do think it is too small. We have no Lexus dealer within ~200 miles. I don't want drive the distance just to see the cargo space. Thanks.

 

IDK about you, but I am so glad I am done with classic cars. Nothing but a money pit.

Ooooh yeah!! I know. I died a little on the inside selling my 302 '68 mustang.

The only parts of that car which weren't moded are: rear drums w/ leaf spring and fuel system

I am with you on that. In 2009 I was working under my 1963 Tbird convertible, getting rust in my eyes, and thinking "Do I really want to drive this thing after I get it running?" I sold it and bought a new Miata. At one time I owned 6 1963 Thunderbirds. My wife mentioned that one or two is a hobby, but six is a sickness. I now own none.

 

hmmmm I would say sickness, just a hobby thst got out if hand. But SWMBO can turn out to be right from time to time.

Intrestingly there's a guy in California who has 23 Mustangs in his backyard.

I had a '57 Olds Super 88, money pit is right and I really couldn't take care of it as well as it deserved. And it felt like I was driving a mobile cave.

 

What did you mean, “going to manufacture my own”? What did you have in mind?

 

All that stupid foam under the carpet - I was going to replace that without a structure with storage in it.

 

We were not considering a Toyota at all, as my wife detests the look of the previous Prius (rear end of a Pontiac Aztec) and I was unwilling to accept the foibles of nickel-metal hydride technology. Honda uses Li-ion and was a possibility (we've gotten one every other year, passing them on to our kids and grandchildren) but the Civic hybrid was no longer being produced and we were not intrigued by the Accord or Clarity models.

Being a thrifty Scotsman, my curiosity was piqued when one of the sites I frequent pointed out the styling, savings, and other attributes available with the current Prius Prime (over $11k in credits/rebates...woohoo!). We did some reconnoitering of the local dealerships and bought from the one with the best overall deal. The Plus was nice, but the Premium offered so much more for a small premium while the Advanced were much pricier with options we did not need. hence we got the Premium (here's our other "babies", that fulfill our itch-niche):
