Oh boy, someone doesn't get "sarcastic" humor!

Yes, Tesla has been in "survival mode' for the last 10 years! ;) (@orenji, notice the winking emoji? I'm being sarcastic.)

I ask the following as you have driven with Autopilot for two months, if you still need to monitor all surrounding while driving how do you know when to intervene? How do you know the car is not going in the right direction or stopping, etc.? I guess I don’t see the point of autopilot for any car if you still need to be in charge of the car.

Your sarcasm may become reality sooner then you want to believe.

Is that your opinion or do you have a link to that assertion? For the record, a survey of current Tesla owners rate their cars as reliable by 90% of owners. That is a statistic that should be the even of any maker. (source available upon request)

Tesla has tons of features that are not available on ICEVs including Toyotas at a similar price point. Anyone who says differently is not familiar with Tesla products.

What Tesla has is higher customer satisfaction than any Toyota product. (source: Consumer Reports)

Customer Satisfaction is not the same as long term reliability. Toyota and some other Japanese makes have earned the status of building reliable vehicles that last 20 years without major issues, if they are maintained properly. Tesla customer satisfaction is based on enjoyment of a new car, the real test will be a survey in 10 years of Tesla owners.

I use my judgement and eyes when driving on autopilot. Sometimes I take it off autopilot when I think that driving manually is safer than leaving it on autopilot. When on autopilot, I am more engaged with my car in a good way. I don't use my cel phone, I don't read a book, I don't "rest" my eyes, but I am more relaxed and able to monitor my surroundings in 360 degrees - forward, rear view camera, rear view mirror, and side mirrors. I would know when the car might not be going in the right direction or not going to stop by using my eyes!

@orenji, you are presuming that autopilot is Full Self Driving! For the umpteenth time, IT IS NOT! It is autopilot that acts as driver assist, more so than any other make of car out there. It really works well within its known limitations as NOT being Full Self Driving.

I understand that Autopilot is not full self driving, there is no confusion on my end. What I am confused on is how it is beneficial to pay for this feature, if you are still fully aware of all your surroundings, just in case the system trips up. But if it works for you then it does!

As to Tesla drivers, " it could be texting, phone calls, DUI, who knows!" Oh wait, Tesla will know because of the high tech feedback built into the car. For example, the guy who drove his Model S under a truck last year and killed himself, had his car on autopilot while playing a movie in his car. He was so focused on the movie, he never saw the truck. And Tesla was able to prove it in a lawsuit. The fact that the guy was killed while on autopilot was headline news. The fact he wasn't fully engaged with his car seems to have missed the headlines.

@orenji about 90% of Tesla owners who have autopilot use it and benefit from it. About 10% do not. It is an optional feature. You are not required to purchase it. If you feel you are not competent to use it, by all means don't buy it.

Wait! He was playing a movie in his car? So the system allowed the movie to play while the car was moving? Wow pretty high tech!

It’s not my competency I would be concerned with, just think it’s a beta test for Tesla to come out with a FULLY functional Autopilot.

My sarcastic humor has a better chance of NOT becoming a reality than Toyota's, contrary to your hope. ;);)

No, he played the movie through his cel phone, which you can do with a Toyota. He overrode the system safeguards. No one in their right mind would do that. But nice jumping to conclusions.

I was hoping you would say he was on his cell phone. So how did the cars high tech feed back know he was on the cell phone? More likely the Police were able to conclude he was on his phone. Or is Tesla’s cockpit camera spying on drivers?

My model 3 has some built-in Satellite radio, but I can't guarantee they are the stations you prefer. But you can always connect to your cel phone and play through the car audio.

o_O Any other company, Wall St. would be praising the benefits of downsizing, and the CEO's getting bonuses.

Ever fly in something with more than one propeller? Commercial aircraft have been using autopilot for decades now, and letting it be in charge of the plane has the same benefits as these advanced driving aids do for cars, and Tesla isn't the only maker installing them. the systems in my mothers RFX can do at least 80% to 90% of what Tesla's autopilot does. You hear nothing about accidents when Honda's, Toyota's, GM's, Ford's, etc. systems are in use simply because they aren't Tesla.

The driver overrode the system's safeguards, that's how Tesla knew. Tesla is constantly updating their systems through OTA to prevent hacks by irresponsible owners. In fact they have a "contest" right now for hackers to defeat their systems. The most successful hackers wins a free Tesla. Toyota systems can be hacked too. What contest are they running right now or ever?

{quote]Or is Tesla’s cockpit camera spying on drivers?[/QUOTE]
You mean like Cadillac's interior cameras do? Where is your outrage? You mean like Toyota's interior cameras do? Oh wait, Toyota doesn't have interior cameras as a prelude to Full Self Driving.

Cadillac uses interior camera to watch if you are fully engaged with your car while on autopilot. Tesla uses hands on the wheel to insure you are on autopilot. Some Tesla owners have stuck an orange into the spokes of the steering wheel to mimic "hands on the wheel." Tesla quickly discovered this hack and made revisions to the system through OTA updates. What is the latest OTA update you are on in your Toyota?
Tesla says it is in BETA development. I know it is in BETA development because I had to sign papers acknowledging that. If you are not competent being a BETA tester, then don't purchase the system as an option.

Elon says (and Elon comes through with what he says eventually) that Self Driving on city streets will be introduced later this year. It WILL NOT be Full Self Driving. Tesla acknowledges that driver engagement and supervision will still be required, It will be a BETA version of FSD for those pioneer drivers who feel competent being a BETA tester.

The West was won by pioneers migrating West as BETA testers on the Oregon Trail for example. Those who were not comfortable being BETA testers stayed home in Kansas and are wheat farmers today. No shame in being a wheat farmer, my grandfather was one, but it is just a different mindset.

    This from Marketwatch:
Brick and mortar retail locations continued to take a major nosedive this week as Gap, JCPenney and Victoria’s Secret all announced upcoming store closures,

Gap will close 230 stores over the next two years, JCPenney will close 27 stores in 2019 and Victoria’s Secret will close 53 stores in 2019, according to the article.

This sounds rather dire, but it could be good news for franchisees. Finding the right real estate is crucial to a brand’s success. Whether franchisees opt to expand their existing businesses or open multiple units with their brands, these store closures can possibly give them the opportunity to leverage the soon-to-be-available spaces.

Where is your snarky outrage? The fact is, e-commerce is the marketing trend of the future whether it be clothing or automotive sales. The sooner a company realizes that, the stronger the chances of their survival. The legacy automakers dealer franchise business model is a "dead man walking."

Thirteen years ago(longer?), I said 50kWhrs would be minimum to have in an EV. It's obvious that many drivers, who are leadfooters, battery drainers, & human impatient & to-the-top chargers aren't taking long term care of their 75-90kWhr batteries. Worse will be in the future for 50kWhr batteries & abusive electric pack users.
Presently, I would say the present flurry of 64kWhr packs (more?) should be minimum, & 80+MPH travels, hard accelerations, & fast charging to the max should be zero. Only by such, with drivers who ABC & slowly, can 15-20+ years of EV longevity ever be obtained & even with that, maybe not.

Absolutely. Layoffs are a fact, not something to be agreed or disagreed upon.
Like you, I’ll be glad when they go under, and not darken our doorways with anymore renewable energy electric car nonsense.
Bring on big oil and climate change! Long live Toyota!

I have worked there and know a few graduates who still work there. Spoiler alert if you have family and friends say goodbye to them all. Not a friendly dude to work with. Very little compassion to workers well being (which is why I left).

What the consumer sees based on an article and what actually goes down in there ... with the short cuts they take - how else are they meeting demands? There is a reason why I am biased to stand on my side of the argument

But remember everything I have mentioned is as of right now

I am curious how that is obvious, and what you mean by "many"?
Many could mean more than 3, or could be taken to mean 51% or more, or something else.

In my opinion, the minimum acceptable battery size will shrink over time, as people get a better idea of just how much battery range they need. That is quite a ways down the line though, as EVs have just reached Hybrid market share. I'd suggest the most popular range EVs won't start shrinking until market share of EVs is at least 15%.

You betcha that Toyota will live long. They are so far ahead of Tesla. Just because they are not offering an EV at the moment does not mean they won’t and that it will not outsell Tesla when they do. It’s funny that the few who want an EV now think all companies have to have one now. Toyota and all other Legacy car manufacturers will have EV offerings. But it’s nice to know we still have a choice in what we drive, for now!

Considering this thread was started by someone trading their prime for a model 3, I’d say the shoe is on the other foot
