Actually, we are still using Mobil 1 0W20, but want to go buy oil for our future oil changes. Costco has a sale today on Mobil 1 that they carry.

Several people here recommended higher viscosity motor oil, so we are thinking about it. Then we found the High Mileage oil by several different brands, and are thinking about that.

Then we found this thread: Mobil 1 not a true synthetic oil anymore? - NASIOC
It's a little dated, but it claims Mobil 1 5W30 is actual more viscous than their 10W30 (at least in 2007).

    Brain overload! :notworthy:

Just realized that we haven't really got an answer regarding the original question. Are the Mobil 1 High Mileage oils that aren't ILSAC rated (which is all of them except the Extended Protection version) a bad match for the Prius, or should they be good?

Only Mobil 1 0W-40 is a true synthetic oil.

Isn't that a little thick for the 2010 Prius? Or is it okay?

I’m using 0w-40 on our 2010 woth now 198 k miles on it:).

Our Prius consumes about a quart every 5k miles or so, which is reduced due to the heavier oil;).

    Works well(y).

Thanks Ray. How much did it consume per 5k miles before you switched to 0w-40?

What brand oil is the 0w-40 that you're using?

About a quart every 4500 miles when it was a bit younger at 130 k miles. Initially went with 5w-30 prior to 0w-40 and have been running that for 20 k miles now:).

Currently Castrol Edge but next up is Pennzoil Pure Platinum. Some say that is the nectar of the oil gods;).

But it runs nice and quiet(y).

Thanks Ray. When you were getting a quart of consumption every 4500 miles had you already switched to 5w-30, or were you on a 0w-20 (or something else)?

A 10% reduction in consumption is good, but we need a larger reduction as our Prius is consuming 1Qt per 750 miles.

I noticed that since I started using Mobil 1, young wome are more attracted to me, cashiers at grocery stores insist on providing unsolicited discounts and red lights turn instantly green when I approach intersections. But the best thing is that my poop smells like freshly baked pastries. Living proof!

Which Mobil 1 oil are you referring to?

On Mobil's official Mobil 1 page for their standard Mobil 1 oil, they make no mention of a 0w-40. See
Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oil | Mobil™ Motor Oils

There is the Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0w-40, but we haven't found it on the Mobil 1 website yet. Is that the oil you are referring to, or is it a different one?

That was at 0w-20 prior to swapping;).

It maintained there for 5w-30 but I fed it high quality redline oil and figured the price for that wasn’t worth the oil consumption, so I clubbed up and went with equally good Pennzoil at a reduced price :).

This may not help your situation, but it can’t hurt either (y).

Not at all. It’s acceptable per Toyota for non-cafe regions around the world. I have been using it for 20k miles and the car runs great and still gets great MPG’s. I have 105k miles now and no oil usage.

Yes the Euro formula. I buy a 5 quart jug at Walmart for $25.00.

Is the following correct for your situation?
    0w20 Consumption at 1qt/4500mi
    5w30 Consumption at 1qt/5000mi
    0w40 Consumption at 1qt/5000mi

That article was written in 2016 so something is not right. I see on the Mobil site 0W40 is FS now. But At Walmart they Carry European Formula, will need to research this more now.

So it appears I have been using Mobil 1 FS which is still a Europe Formula that’s approved by Mercedes, Audi, VW, Nissan. BMW is the only one who is no longer on the list. It appears that the FS version is slightly thinner then the old M1 0W-40 which probably is better for our Prius anyway.

That’s about right. I don’t measure it to the exact mile, but with 0w-40 it’s between a quart every 5-6k miles;).

Good enough for a car that has nearly 200 k miles and going strong (y).

As far as my research has gone Mobil increased the TBN number in the 0W-40 “FS” bottles. BMW switched from Castrol to Shell as OEM oil provider, as well as decreased the service interval on later models. We have several Mercedes vehicles, have had two ‘08 3 Series and one ‘15 5 Series. I think it makes sense that they do not apply for “Approval” for the seemingly old specifications in a weight that is uncommon in current vehicles.
