I was looking at changing the oil in my Prius this coming weekend, and had to order, from a sister store, the oil filter for my car. Since I reinstalled the engine, it’s been running Mobil 1 0-20 and the Mobil 1 filter. I prefer it, since it has the plastic rings holding the pleats a set distance apart. I was thinking of adding Lucas Oil Stabilizer, but even the synthetic stuff is like molasses. Then I found this. Lucas Low Viscosity Stabilizer. It’s a 12 oz bottle, so it makes up the .4 of the 4.4 quarts required. Any thoughts?
I use BG Products Extended Life moa on our 2010. Keeps things basic longer. Have at it and keep us posted .
Ironically, Scotty Kilmer released a video of the exact product just today As for oil filter, I've been using mobil 1. The blue rings keep the cartridge structure in check, won't get squashed and wavy when you change it out. The last oil change was done with Redline 0w-20 w/mobil 1 filter @ 12,000 miles. The filter claims to continue collecting up to 20,000 mi, by then who knows if detergents are still present.
I have used STP back in the old days to quiet my noisy engines due to excessive clearances but would not use anything on a good low mileage engine that uses no oil.
That stuff Scotty's pouring reminds me of the hypoid gear oil I need for our daughter's Pilot, thick as molasses.
Why? I am always baffled at how effective marketing can be. All this stuff on the shelves. Must need it, right? Besides, the claims are so persuasive. I must need it. Even though manual never mentions anything about this product. I must need it. Maybe if I spend more money on these products the car will last longer. I must need it. Come, on! You don't need anything but good maintenance routine mentioned in the owners' manual. Why would you want to spend money on oil additives? I don't get it. Brilliant marketing, calling it oil STABILIZER. This assumes that the high quality oil you put into the engine destabilizes somehow and more importantly, this stuff will UN-destabilize it. Ridiculous marketing douche-bag speak! The most important part, however, is if it makes YOU feel better, by all means put it in. I am sure your engine doesn't give a rat's tail.
No. I was on a Techron bandwagon at some point and have tried it. Having said that I have put it into my gas fewer than 6 times sine 1981 when I started owning and driving cars (and added motorcycles in 1989).
I've got an econo size bottle of fuel injector cleaner: Canadian Tire product, it was on sale for half price. I've resolved to use a dose in the tank every 6 months, in sync with oil changes. Oil, I just stay with the straight stuff.
Years ago I had one of the early 5.3 in a GMC that had a startup rattle. It was out of the “extended warranty” coverage to repair it. One bottle of Lucas every 15k and it never made another startup rattle.
I use the unadvertised stuff. No need to waste money on marketing if what you sell is the best. Word of mouth is powerful .
It makes my 2010 feel better too. I’ve managed to keep oil consumption in check . That’s worth it to me.
I used Marvel Mystery oil once years ago and it freed up a sticky hydraulic valve lifter in my wife's 1960 Buick. You don't see that stuff advertised much.
Hello everyone. There is NO "best" oil filter. I say that because right now you can look up and read all different stories from all different experts and different filters are #1 all the time. Some filters seem to be however, on all the lists. Those include, in NO real order here: Amsoil, Bosch, Mobile 1, Purple, Purolator and WIX. Fram is an interesting brand. Lots of reports rate Fram as being very good ... while it's very easy to find reports and vids that claim/show that Fram are junk filters. In at least 1 report I've read, Toyota filters were looked at very favorably. Motorcraft filters are usually rated high along with AC/Delco. Usually most "house brand" filters of auto part stores are by one of the companies I've listed. As a young kid I always went with Fram. My last car, a Ford ZX2 had Motorcraft filters and all the cars in-between got whatever name-brand was on sale. The brand that makes you happy is what you should go with. Replace the filter every oil-change. Don't be a cheap geek.
Oil is oil. NO major brand makes junk. "House-Brands" again are made by the major companies. Toyota oil I believe, is made by Mobile Oil. I could be wrong though. Synthetic oil from it's beginning has gotten better all the time. I'm pretty sure that to be fully synthetic, the oil needs to start with group 4 or 5 base. With the price of the stuff today don't pay premium prices for ordinary product. There are all kinds of reasons that synthetic oil is better than conventional. I believe them. My '62 Falcon however, gets conventional oil based on $$$ and the theory ... "If it works don't fix it.". 5-30 winter 20-50 summer. I've always liked any major name-brand that was on sale when I was shopping. Again ... Whatever makes you happy. I'll be using synthetic 0-30 or 5-30 or 10-30 based on simple compression check come next oil change.
