    Nifty! Quiet is always good!
I guess it changes the valve timing a little bit.
I must have one of the better ones. I've had no problems with the engine.
EGR was pretty clean and clear. I only burn 1/2-3/4 of a quart of oil between 10,000 oil changes.

    1. Still the original water pump. Plan on installing scan gauge II and monitor temperatures.

    2. After a quick check, I'm wondering if the 2010's & 2011's had a different cylinder head bolt. Comparing parts on Rockauto between 2010's and 2012's, noticed this part only covers the first 2 years of the Gen 3.

Found another straw to grasp at...

It's very odd that the EGR cooler wasn't plugged at 180k miles if it's never been cleaned. They're usually near plugged @ 120k.

There's at least a couple TSBs for EGR that I know of. TSB 0027-16 describes the EGR valve sticking when there are too many carbon deposits.

There are also reports of EGR coolers being clogged and no DTC on the dash.

Could the valve have stuck closed, leading to large increases in temperature and pressure in the cylinders and taking out the headgasket?
You'd notice a fuel economy hit before the headgasket. People have reported 4-6 MPG gains after cleaning a clogged EGR system.

@Raytheeagle cleaned my cooler for me. While it had buildup, it was definitely not completely plugged.

From the photos and the overall job, the only definitive things seen and observed are:

    1) a break in the sealant from the firing ring into the water jacket

    2) a loose head bolt nearest the area of failure

I've only taken our Prius into dealerships so far, and almost all work was warranty. Similarly, it was always dealership work with our string of Hondas. The costs almost without fail at the upper level of "tolerance". I noticed too, about a decade back: you needed an extra "initial assessment" visit, even when the issue was patently obvious, and there was of course an extra $75~125 charge for that. Oh, and there's always "shop supply charge", even for something like programming a new fob.

I’m sure you’ll give it a shot next time:).

But there wasn’t very much in there compared to @tallassazn ’s which was cleaned at the same time:cool:.

Chase the water with a air compressor blow dry, then chase it with a bit of carb cleaner and it’s good to go and all done in short order(y).

Our Prius was bought with 68K miles. The only DTC ever was a misfire and I changed coils and plugs. That was until last December when the DTC was thrown when the misfires and stumbles started. The car was towed home and when I removed the EGR cooler, you could barely feel airflow from the back end with 125 PSI in at the other. That was at 246K miles.

From the pictures, I think this kit is missing a few things, but I could be wrong.

    - Crank Seal
    - The large o-ring which stays in the block (see attached picture)
    - Water Pump Gasket
    - Thermostat Gasket
    - The two o-rings on the timing cover for the oil filter housing assembly

I have done at least 20 of these and can guarantee you not one of them had any loose head bolts.

One of the bolts definitely required less effort to break loose than the other 9. The bolt did not make the “pop pop” noise when I went to break it loose.

Are you suggesting that the threads in my block may have issues?
