I'm looking to try this procedure. I have one smart key fob that is currently functioning: unlock/lock buttons work, keyless entry works, car starts when I am inside with key. However, when the key fob is inserted in the slot, the engine will not start. Will I be able to successfully program a new smart key fob if my original smart key fob does not allow power on car when inserted in slot?

Thanks in advance for the advice, and for this amazingly helpful thread.

I asked a few locksmiths and they were too scared to work on it. Ended up shelling out $550 in total for the key.

Terrific thread! Just called North Hills Toyota in Pittsburgh. In the beginning of the thread, member 1984corvette reported they sold him one for $110 shipped. Well, that price has now doubled. Just got off the phone with North Hills, and they now want $225 for just the transmitter (not including shipping, not including programming, and not including cutting of the metal key).

If you have a key that works in the slot, you just have to copy step 1 over to the non working key. That key must have been a replacement and someone missed that programming step

This could be interesting, but potentially in a slightly bad way.

When the fob is inserted into the fob slot, the "start" works off an RFID chip instead of the wireless signal from the fob.
If the car won't start when the fob is inserted into the slot, that may mean the fob cover was swapped out at some point and the RFID chip may not have been switched to the new cover. If you only have one key......and it has no RFID chip, it's going to be tough to program a new one since the procedure requires a working fob to be inserted into the slot during the "DIY chicken dance" procedure.

May be different for dealers using techstream to program a key.....

PROCEDURE A failed for me the first time (Red anti-theft light did not remains on). The first time through I used slow, deliberate actions (pausing several seconds after each action). Seems that was not what the car was expecting. Ran through it at "normal" speed and it worked. Bought the transmitter at Amazon (search for B000KZ0HYY) for $166. Thank you for providing these clear instructions!

I’m not able to pass “PROCEDURE 1”: step 3.

After the step 3, the red anti-theft light is not becoming solid. Just keeps blinking. I bought a brand new SKS keyfob from a Toyota dealer. What could be the problem? I’ve tried it with different speeds.

So I am stuck on steps 9B and 9C. I successfully get it to lock/unlock after 9C, but the fob doesn't work afterwards to remote unlock/lock the doors, or start the car not in the ignition. Only to start the car, while in the ignition. This is a chrome logo fob from the dealer. Thoughts??

Hi guys -- new to the site but not to the Prius. Have enjoyed reading these!

I have a weird key fob issue and have pored through all the threads and can't find a solution. I have a 2008 Prius and the key fob won't work. Just before it stopped working, I mistakenly put my key through the washing machine, but I do Not think this is the fundamental issue because the fob does seem to communicate with the car -- see paragraph below. I dried out the fob and put in a new fob battery. When I touch on the lock/unlock buttons on the key fob, the red light on the fob goes on. The buttons on the fob are not stuck.

I have tried re-setting the fob following the instructions above, and it doesn't work, but the weirdest part is that after the car is put into "programming" mode and the it automatically locks and unlocks, if I press the lock/unlock button on the fob, the car will quickly lock/unlock. So it IS communicating with the car! But that is the only time that the Fob works at all; otherwise the fob is totally worthless.

I've also done the other suggestions for fixing this: I have made sure the SKS/key button is pressed out; I have also unplugged the 12-V battery (twice, just to be sure). It didn't help.

One other note: before this, I had lots of water in the battery area, which I removed. I also had recently installed a new passenger side mirror, but the fob did work after I finished that procedure.

    Any ideas?

    Hello and welcome.

    Just couple of observations.
The language used here would imply that you only have one working key fob. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The above procedure (known as the "Chicken Dance") is not a reset, it is to add a new key fob to the car, but you need another good, fully working key fob to add the new key.

If I am correct with the above implication that you only have one key fob (that does not work), the "Chicken Dance" is no help to you.

@SFO and/or @Raytheeagle have regular meet ups in the (Northern ???) CA area and have Techstream available. If you can get to one of these, they might be able to see a bit more about whats happening in the immobiliser. I'm sure one of those guys will chip in with a yea or a nay.

    I might add:
If you did not open up the key fob to dry it out, I would suggest that you do. I'd remove the circuit board (CB) and give it a good spraying on both sides with CB contact cleaner. Give it a gentle scrub with a clean soft toothbrush. Then blow it dry with clean compressed air (out of a can would be ideal). Check both side of the CB for corrosion damage.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

@dolj is correct that @SFO and I share Techstream and I’m about 30 miles away from you in Fairfield :).

If it intermittently works, it seems to me that the moisture may have corroded or compromised a contact point, leading to the intermittent functionality .

If the fob battery checks out on voltage (around 3.3 volts), is pop the case open and have a look;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Thanks for the response. Yes, when I bought the (used) car it came with only one key and I was hoping to get away with not getting a new one... but that’s looking like a bad plan at this point.

Looking forward to connecting with the other local guys. Thanks!

Thanks @Raytheeagle — Unfortunately the fob is still not working properly so I think I’ll have to get a new one.

Keep me posted about local meetups- thanks!

Trying to program the 2005 Prius SKS key for door remote lock/unlock. When I get to the point when I press the buttons on the old key, the car cycles through the lock/unlock sequence four times.

Tried several times (also with Techstream), same result.

The car came with only one silver logo key that disables immobilizer when the key is inserted into the dashboard. Buttons don't lock/unlock the doors and no SKS functionality.

    Any ideas?

Using Techstream, how many keys does it say are registered to the car?

As your existing key fob is not fully functional, you won’t be able to use the Chicken Dance to add a new key fob (assuming you have a brand new (virgin) key fob).

You will need to do the Reset and Reseed procedure, which you will not be able to do without a reseed code.

An authorised and suitably equipped auto locksmith or a dealer would be your options for this.

Don't remember, but I've deleted all the other keys

    I see.

Got it - thanks. Any chance of getting the reseed code online?

Thanks so much to usnavystgc and the guys who did the videos. Got it on the 2nd try and saved hundreds of dollars over the dealer price. Getting the key cut was harder than the chicken dance, lol.
