Any of you lucky Prime owners get rear-ended?
My Prime Advanced rear driver side turn signal assembly isn't working after replacement for rear bumper damage. Any experiences and solutions to this problem are welcome. It's still at the dealer from the body shop. Now they're saying it might be one of the multitude of computers malfunctioning. I want to get my damn car back!!

Sorry to hear that I know what a pain in the nice person it is to have you Prime in the shop. Best of luck hopefully they can get it all fixed.

The latest finding in my "repairs so far", is a broken wire in the wiring harness, discovered in a hidden corner by the mechanic who did a thorough trace. They can't splice it and must order the entire harness coming from, "out of state"! You gotta love that modern technology!!!
Lord help us with all these super complicated modern cars. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) is just something these manufacturers of our cars just can't stand. And no more spares!!! Aaarrrrrghhh!! Meanwhile, I get to drive this marvelous Nissan Versa abomination, spewing tons of pollution and driving like a drunken SUV clodhopper turd!!
Did you notice how our comments here are edited to substitute the words, "NICE PERSON" for an edgy term used for posterior??!! Come on, please, that 3 letter term is in the dictionary, defined in part as "a donkey"; we're all adults here (I think?) and can deal with this "harsh?" term!! Perhaps they could substitute the term, "a**", so the entire meaning is not lost? Better yet, just leave it alone, "Nice Person Whole"!!

    I think "arse" is allowed?

    Smart arse sounds goofy though...

    Just to rant:

Cars used to have bumpers. Then they switched to fragile fairings. Now they festoon those fragile fairings with sensors, tail light sculptures, what have you. What's not to like.

I have felt and will be feeling your pain again.

Soon after getting my new Prime about two years ago, I backed into a telephone pole, damaging the right rear fender area. It took about six weeks to get it back. The big problem was they couldn't get a light to extinguish somewhere, and it meant a new computer. that had to be shipped (as in boat!) from Japan.

On Thursday, I was backed into someone again. And again damaged the right rear section. It looks like only the blinker "arsembly" was damaged, but I'll get the full picture at the adjuster on Monday.

You poor Primer!! Your experience with rear bumper dents is analogous to my experience with flat tires! Mine, fortunately, is far cheaper and quicker to resolve.
I did finally get Le PrimeSnail back after about 3 weeks of total downtime. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder; what a screaming understatement with regards to my Prime Advanced!! I'm back in heaven and all is well with the world!!
All those Eco Monsters better look out; Le PrimeSnail is back, and blasting (at carefully controlled, moderate speeds, Har, har) on SoCal roads, reaching for new Heights of Ecoism!!

Addendum, 03-13-19: I sent in the DMV form for replacement CAV (formerly called HOV) decals for my car, with another $22. I was told it would take about 8 weeks to receive the decals! The California DMV sends you the entire set, even though only the rear 3 were destroyed by the bodyshop when they replaced my rear bumper. This is the type of aggravation that follows a supposedly minor "dinged" rear bumper! 20 years ago, $150, and you were back on your way in less than a week; today, over $3000.00, and you're still messing around with little BS things after 3 weeks, like rental car reimbursement. I don't know if this is really progress!!?? And of course, there's that infuriating drama with my 4 flat (no spare) tires in about a year and a half, compared to decades with no flats. What gives??!! The Prime Advanced itself, is still probably the most comfortable, reliable, interesting, technologically overwhelming car I've ever owned. Our modern, stressed out, overcrowded-with-crappy-drivers world does put a HUGE amount of challenges on this exceptional vehicle. I don't think any other current vehicle could do any better in coping with these problems, at such a "low" price. The more I drive this car, the more I'm convinced that a properly executed plugin hybrid like the Prime Advanced, is the best solution for my Socal driving adventure!

Serious question, you have the advance, with all the sensors, and still having rear end damage when backing up? Aren't all the sensors supposed to protect you from hitting stuff? There are two posters in this thread, so I may be conflating damage reports, but I am interested, if your think the 4k extra for the advance should have prevented these types of accidents. I am currently looking at buying a prime, leaning towards the premium as I don't think the sensors are worth it? Thoughts appreciated.

    Hi Lextoy,
If your question is addressed to me, the sensors are invaluable in that they alert you to surrounding or approaching hazards. I've been alerted several times, particularly when parked between GIANT SUVs or trucks, to approaching pedestrians or cars. I have avoided 2 collisions on my left side with vehicles in my blind spot; I suffer from inability to fully turn my head to the left. Auto wipers and auto high beams are wonderful, as is the electric driver's seat, with adjustable lumbar support. The heads-up display and autodimming inside mirror, with remote control for several garage door openers are great. Don't forget the wonderful JBL sound system. Some people like the 11.5" touch screen; I don't. The autoparking might be useful to some; I never use it. All the detectors and electronic gadgets aren't going to prevent determined psycho nutjobs like the hit-and-run "bi***" who rear-ended me from completing their dirty work. The manufacturer's mission should now be to offer much more rugged sensors, to reduce repair costs. Also, return to spare tires in all cars, if necessary, mandated by law. Properly designed self-sealing tires are something else that must be offered. And they should please stop this absurd nonsense about the outrageously complicated self-driving cars; they've got to be out of their minds, or very hungry lawyers to even consider this highly dangerous idea. They can't even make reliable airbags or even seatbelts, or transmissions, or wiring harnesses; they've got to be kidding!

Actually, the rear view camera keeps me from backing into something. The real problem is the sensors on the front bumper. They only detect an object that fairly high above the ground, like maybe two feet. They won't see a high curb that can damage the area below your front bumper. It takes a long time to get used parking the car while avoiding scratching up the front end. So far mine is still pristine, but I have been extra careful.

The rear view camera on my Gen 4 does not stick out beyond the bumper. ;)
It is usually the first thing on the rear to get coated with grime so many times it is not too useful as a camera either. :(

thx all, i meant no disrespect. i hope i didnt ruffle anyones feathers, it was not my intention.
i am the proud owner of a newly acquired 2018 prime Premium, and looking at getting another, so i have options, premium or advance...
this will be the wifes car, so i'm trying to figure out if the extra sensors could saver her form backing into a parking pole, or a small kid, or help her avoid getting side swiped in a parking lot. she just got side swiped by an oncoming vehicle (not in a parking lot), a hit and run, that totalled our 08 prius. luckily wasnt a head on collision. so i'm trying to understand if the extra safety features can actually help in situations like that. i liked the sweet spot of the pricing for the premium, but i am not averse to considering the advance if the options are truly worth it.
it still seems like theres no way to be truly safe, unless we just stay parked in the driveway;)

The sensors aren't perfect, you still have to pay attention. I am convinced there is a gap in coverage of the rear right corner.
But the cross traffic sensors are great.

I agree with @KCWhitney that the sensors will not protect her from every scenario. But they apparently do help a lot. They aren't worth the cost to me, but if it was for my wife, I'd be thinking the same way you are. I'm glad she wasn't hurt.

One of the reasons you still have to pay attention, is to separate the many false beeps from the significant ones.
