I've been shopping around for a replacement Prius and this one caught my eye, though it has some kind of sketchy and interesting details. I'm not going to get it, but it made me think.

Used 2016 Toyota Prius Three in San Jose

Looking at the photos, and plugging the VIN into the Toyota Owners site, I notice it's really a 2 Eco, not a Three. It's a fairly common mistake to get the wrong model listed on used car sites.

My main question is, what could cause a prolonged hybrid malfunction? The photos of the dash shows a warning that says, "Hybrid System Malfunction, Visit Your Dealer". The car has 51K miles, but the service records on the Toyota Owner's site says that there were on and off hybrid malfunction warnings brought up to a dealer at 35K miles, though I couldn't download the full record of that visit. Why wouldn't it have been fixed at 35K miles? It should still be under warranty now, so why isn't it fixed now? It probably wouldn't pass the required emissions test to be eligible to be sold either. It might just be a lemon, or possibly a flood car, though unlikely for a car that seems to be from Tracy/Livermore.

It's strange that the driver's seat is white/black and fabric, but the other seats black Soft-tex. Some kind of customization or crash fix? Isn't Soft-tex only on the higher/highest trims?

The wheels are eye catching and are the main thing that makes the car attractive. They are forged too, though I see curb rash and scratches in the closeups. Tires are 215/50-17 discount tires, slightly larger than stock diameter, I think. Anyone recognize the wheel brand? I assume they aren't Toyota.

I notice a missing plate on the front bumper for the tow hook.

Yeah, too many red flags to even consider this Prius. A problem with the hybrid system could be anything from the battery to the inverter to the ECU that controls the whole thing.

It looks to me like the passenger seat was replaced. The drivers seat matches the Moonstone interior. It may be just the lighting though. On another photo both seats look dark.

Hybrid System Malfunction but in READY mode?? Most malfunctions do not permit READY.

Early 2016 could not switch to Km/h if that is a concern.

The 2 Eco has no spare tire. The Three has a spacesaver spare. I believe the Three has option packages for some of the safety features but the Two Eco did not.

There is no rear wiper, so it definitely is a Two Eco.

Is it at a scrap yard ?
It could be a repaired write off.

Quite the drive home from San Jose California to Anchorage Alaska.

Are they planning on stopping by & visiting you?

No matter what the condition the car is in I think I would trust my instincts, follow them.

    Nice pictures.

Yes, I noticed that too. The sensors are probably still in the original wheels somewhere.

The back seats are black as well. And there's an eco badge on the back.

I search both Anchorage and San Jose because my folks live in San Jose, and I plan to visit there. I'd be too slow to react to a good private party deal at the moment, but looking anyway to get a sense of the market for when I will have a long visit in summer.

"Malfunction, Visit Your Dealer". When mine came up with about 8-12 (lost count trying to write them down) Malfunctions, it was because of a single event fail of the brake light switch - which never recurred in 5 months before I got it fixed. But it showed up in the Vehicle Log - so this car's should have shown up to the mechanic preparing the car for sale.

In my case, because the brake pedal (and hence brake light) is related to 1) braking, 2) shifting, 3) POWER ON, 4) RADAR Cruise, 4) ABS 5) Stability Control, 6) AEB - and lots of other things - each one came up with a malfunction.

The Hybrid System Malfunction could similarly have just some minor issue - which may in fact be semi-unrelated to the Hybrid system.

But the odd seats - there's something really wierd there. Unless they're really well made seat covers?

I wouldn't consider it because of the colour (though technically, black isn't a colour - the absence of colour or light).

That would not be a Hybrid System Malfunction though. The interior is Moonstone (white). I think the strange sighting sometimes makes the seats look black. (or they changed the drivers seat between photos)

I'll be out there maybe in July. I still like Turd Gens (can say that now as a non-owner now;)), but it'd be a 2015, or, of if an older one, @Mendel Leisk 's car, not yours. Plus you need to get to 300K miles.

    It’s not @jerrymildred ’s per se;).

I was parked next to one that my staff members has all week and he hasn’t bought gas in over 2 months:).

He kept egging me on to upgrade:cool:.

He has an advanced and has done some tasteful upgrades to it;).

But it appears @Lightning Racer is wanting a newer Gen3 :(.

So I’ll keep piling on the miles on ours(y).

@Prodigyplace - yes maybe, but when I said "The Hybrid System Malfunction could similarly have just some minor issue" - I meant that it could be that some other seemingly unrelated thingy in the car triggered that warning. We wouldn't know - maybe it also flashed some other Malfunction warnings and came to land on this one.

The same as my brake light switch error triggered a pile of seemingly unrelated Malfunction warnings. After mine flashed the warnings, it ended up with just one on the display - I think the Cruise one, but that was 2½yrs ago so not certain. BUT - in my case, turning the car off and on, it disappeared.

I can't see them all being the same. Maybe there is a very professionally fitted seat cover - maybe someone didn't like SOFTEX? Or it was a UBER and he damaged his Driver's seat and got one from a wrecker?

I had a work-mate in the early 2000s bought a new MINI - her pride and joy. And she loaned it to her husband, who, with his old fashioned mobile phone (cell?) clipped on his belt, cut noticeably into the almost brand-new leather seatback. She had to buy a whole new seat leather covering - which didn't quite match the leather of the rest of the car (but only if you looked closely) - but at ~$1000 for one to be done, she wasn't going to pay to do the rest of the seats.

Was black softtex available with moonstone dash trim? As crazy as it sounds it looks like the black seats are the add

For the record my 4 non touring vin comes up an eco 2 as well

Why is that towhook cover missing. Wonder if it has been towed
