    The Prius was down ~30% from 2016-2017 so that's a two-year slump of 30%

Sadly, this brochure was probably not about the Prime. You can find the same image on toyota.jp's marketing page for the hybrid Prius.

Yes, TOYOTA jp only shows this rear seat photo against PRIME:

And the USA TOYOTA 2019 only says 4:

It looks like in the Japanese Market, MIRAI can be 4 or 5 seats. The arrow points to what looks like a Centre Seat Belt.

I think that's just the rear left seat belt :(

Yep - maybe. It's an odd car in the photo - without LH back door and central pillar.

I must be in the minority here: with kids having long ago left the nest we PREFER a four seater which has wider, more comfortable seats in the rear rather than trying to squeeze 3-across. Shoot, the two pseudo-buckets even look richer than those 3 back seat squished in like sardine cans. Okay, maybe I went a tad too far with that last dig, but my wife and I really do prefer the 4 seat configuration. Heck, normal sized adults can sit in 'em for hours in reasonable comfort.

    End of rant!

    Yep maybe.

When we had 3 children, we had 5 seater hatches, probably a bit smaller overall, but they fitted comfortably.

I went for a few years where it was me, maybe with the dog, very occasionally a passenger or my Mum&Dad with me - increasingly after Dad's licence was revoked. Dad's passed on now, Mum's in care and can't get in a car any more.

Now it's moved to another phase - pick up the grandchildren - 4 usually, one is in a child-seat still which has permanently been in the car for the past 18 months.

I envision could be almost another decade before I'd be comfortable with a 4 seat car - and then, why not - finally get a 2 seater!!!

The desire for a fifth seat in cars of this size mainly comes down to two things. The first is in order to carry five out locally. Have a friend that wanted four door cars, even when a young, single male, just because he wanted to be able to easily transport friends and family. The other is because that fifth seat is generally the safest place to be during a crash, which means some parents would like to put their kid there.

Then in the end, you don't have to use the fifth seat, ever. At most, you'll miss out on the little extra storage space from a middle armrest cubby, which you likely will rarely use because the majority of the time, you are in the front.
