i am thrilled with my new 2018 Prime Premium, just got it a month ago. but now have a dilemma, i sold my old car already, and now wifes 2008 prius got wrecked. i was planning to keep that car another few years:(
she is fine, got side swiped, and the damage is over 8500?? i call bs, because it looks like only cosmetic damage to me, but anyway. its done and over, and i already sold my old car as i mentioned. ugh.
INS is giving my approx 7500 for the 2008...
so i could go get another PRIME? while they are fantastically reduced in the northeast, still 5k off for another month.
do i really want two 2018 primes ?
    here is the thought process.
    1) i need a car now.
    2) manufacturer rebate of 5k wont be around in a month
    3) dealers want to get rid of 2018s now even more than they did a month ago
    4) federal tax credit might not be around for next year. 4502, state credit also unknown, currently 750.
    5) i can probably get another premium for under 26k and thus under 21k with fed and state tax credits.
    6) even if we only keep this one for 3 years, it will likely be worth 15k at that point, which is 6k of depreciation if i can get it for 21k... thats 2 k a year to drive a new car, hassle free. thats almost as cheap as what i was driving the 2008 prius for long term.
    7) the longer we keep the prime the cheaper the yearly cost of operation becomes...
is it weird that i am seriously considering buying another leftover 2018 prime ?
this one would have to be financed, but i can pay it off early within two years.

Given the rebates and tax credits I'd jump

We first became aware of the savings back in December, JUMPED at the opportunity (all told saved more than $11K off list) and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I did the same with 2017 primes with much less incentive. My wife and I have no regrets.

Do it, but don't get the same color. The Prime has a resale value you wouldn't believe, but you have to get a great deal when you buy.

Consider the Advanced. I think the extra safety features are worth the extra cost.

I've also bought 2. 3 years later it will still with worth more than 15k or more. Anyway it's cheaper than regular Prius. Why not? (Unless you need 5 seats)

Go for it. You and the wife can have Prime races or best MPG bragging rights. Besides that is how baby primes are made...I have been told.

Ha ha, Thx all for the encouragement. Just got back from a quick trip to DC. Still wrapping things up with the ins. company, and made a few calls today to see if I can find another prime for the same price as I got on the first one...It's amazing after a little practice what I was able to get out of the salesmen...I was hanging up on them and they were calling back 5 min later with better prices.lol. Fingers crossed I hear back tomorrow if they can find a decent color with black interior. It's obvious they are making money no matter how cheap they mark them down, just based on how quickly they all basically hit my number. I thought I got a pretty good deal the first time, but the speed with which they came down to it, makes me believe there was another grand or two to haggle for. Oh well, in the end getting out of my 08 prius and into another 2018 at this price point is a good enough deal I don't have to lose sleep over the last bit of price I could have gnawwed off the dealer...I'm looking at annual cost of ownership over the next ten years of 1650 per year per prius. That's if I sell them for zero at the ten year mark. Can't beat it.

I'm a little late to the party, but I totally agree.... Buy another one, consider a Prime Advanced this time.

What's so great on the advance that is worth an extra 4k? Several have said it, but I'm not sold on the idea. It's like paying 20% extra for the same car?? I'm a bit leery of all the tech, if that stuff starts to need maintenance, I'm stuck with the dealer for sure...big bucks

I think I'm in your camp on this. Some of those advanced features are pretty cool, but it is more potential for stuff to break and even the Premium is pretty intimidating in that regard. I'm totally satisfied with the bells and whistles on this thing. (y)

Just remember if you already bought your PRIME this year, to qualify for another $4500 tax credit, you must have at least $9000 tax liability in the year 2019. Otherwise, you will only get whatever the tax liability over $4500 for your second PRIME.

That said, PRIME is a great car if your wife was happy with regular PRIUS and she does not need a larger cargo or 3 seats on the rear, I would go for it. I was in the same boat as you last year. I bought my PRIME and traded Gen3. At that time my wife was driving Sienna, which we thought it will give us at least a few more years of rides. Then Sienna was gone, we had only a single car, PRIME. I really thought about buying another one. But, our needs were different. We really needed another vehicle with larger cargo and AWD with better ground clearance.

One good thing about having two of the same cars in a household, I think, is that you can use exactly the same parts and accessories. And services are the same so you don't have to learn car specific procedures twice.

For the price, you can drive it for a few years and then sell with minimum lose.

thx salamander, yes i'm keeping track of the tax implications, i should be ok despite getting laid off for a few months this summer. will work more OT if i have to to make up the gap, i'll know better come september where i stand income and tax wise.luckily we dont need 5th seat, and dont really need awd here in philly, we got by for last few years with a rwd benz and the fwd prius. its pretty good in the snow unless its deep;)
only issue will be storage capacity, the old prius was our go to airport car, it could stow some luggage, it was amazing!! the prime is not so well endowed in that dept. already tried, it sucked:( so we will be taking uber, or asking a friend, or borrowing the parents 4runner. they are retired and drive like 3k miles a year. that thing needs the exercise... i havent tried laying down the rear seat to see if storage is better. but that only works if picking up 2 or less at the airport, with limited luggage i suspect

i agree, the same car makes service easier, and the prius is so reliable and low maintenance its going to be super easy. with the 2 year free service and warranty, i 'm looking forward to a few years of freedom!! my fleet was getting a bit old and it was starting to get annoying. unfortunately just spend way to much to get the 08 up to snuff for the next few years, and a month later wham, totaled.

Please read the complete list of extras on the Advanced vs the other Primes which includes the JBL killer system, and a bunch of excellent safety and convenience features. These options make the difference totally worth it!

I think what he means is that those of us who have grown used to the extra feature in the Advanced wouldn't consider giving them up, but we are not sure that some of them may be included with the Premium. Things like blind spot monitoring, heads-up display, wipers and headlights turning on automatically, cross-traffic alert, the car automatically unlocking when you approach with the key in your pocket, the charger locking to the car so a passerby can't pull it out, and so on.

its a done deal. #2 is in the driveway !! blue magnetism with a black interior. Premium. there were not alot of choices left from the 2018s.
wife wanted blue , luckily the dealer was willing to go get one from up north to get the deal done.
now i'm busy setting up all the screens etc, and driving it a few days to make sure its good to go.
next project... window tint. wife thinks its classy to have blacked out windows ;)
