I need a replacement of front windshield. I called a couple shops and the OEM glass is very expensive. close to $1,000. I am considering aftermarket glass now but I am worried the heads up display may not work( the glass needs to be polarized for the projections to work). Are there any aftermarket glass that is compatible with head up display and do not cost so much?

HUD will work on a regular windshield, but you'll see double image. After a while it will bother you more and more and eventually you'll begin regretting being a cheapskate. Alternatively, go ghetto and tint the regular windshield - all or just the portion where HUD reflects.

My windshield is being replaced and the glass company said that there was no aftermarket windshield and that they have to order it from Toyota. Good to hear that they made the right decision.

In my state, there is no deductible on glass replacement, so I'm glad I'm not footing the bill for this. :)

you are probably footing the bill in the high monthly premium for no deductible?

You should check with your insurance company to see if they offer No deductible glass coverage. My older insurance company offered this for less than $10/month as separate from regular comprehensive coverage with deductible. I changed the insurance company to GEICO when I fist bought Gen3 PRIUS, and they did not offer no deductible glass only coverage. But with GEICO, NO DEDUCTIBLE COMPREHENSIVE coverage (which covers glass and rest of the car), my premium was only $14 higher for 6 mo premium. Needless to say, I went with NO DEDUCTIBLE comprehensive plan, and I was glad I had it for my windshield needed to be replaced due to a chip caused by flying rock two weeks after I took the delivery of the car. PRIME (and all Gen4 Prius) windshield is known to be thinner than predecessors and prone to crack and chips, and it is very expensive to replace especially with OEM parts.

Good to know! We also have GEICO on our automobiles and will definitely look into it... thanks for the (ahem) “heads up” (we don’t have an Advanced, but others on this form have indicate our Premium likely. Also has thin glass)

You are welcome. Insurance rates and policy offered are different from state to state so just remember that yours may not have the same offer. GEICO makes very easy to check those "what if" additional coverage price easily online, so please do check it out. My car is PRIME Premium, did not have HUD display. However, all models will need the front-facing radar calibration after glass replacement. This calibration cost seems to vary vastly from a dealer to a dealer. My dealer did it for ~$100 and the cost was fully reimbursed by my insurance. My understanding is that all Gen4 and PRIME have thin glass. I had to wait 3 weeks for OEM windshield to be shipped from Japan.

I picked up my car yesterday and saw my old windshield. I think I got a better idea of why they had to buy OEM from Toyota - there is a part of wiring harness attached to top of the windshield where the camera is. It almost looked like it was glued in place. Also, the glass company left the "Made In Japan" sticker on the glass high above the passenger seat so I know where it came from. :)

Just had the same experience. There are no afterrmarket windshields that have the necessary camera glass heating system needed on Prime Advanced. I am glad I'll get a genuine Toyota replacement. It will take some time for the part to come in, but worth it.

I'm glad they didn't try and rig up some cheap glass and pass it off as Prime worthy.

I have to wonder how they sell these cars new for ~$27K to $34K if all the individual parts are so expensive.

They are expensive to you, not the manufacturer.

auto parts always been a huge markup, much of which is earned IMO. Getting the right part to a shop in timely manner ain't easy. People buy parts to have them "in case" when digging into a repair, then return.

Few years ago I heard Toyota Camery had 11 diff Front Fender sheet metal that all looked alike on outside. Diff was variations in mounting holes. This was easy for Toyota to do when manufacturing and inventory got computerized. Some say it was to stop aftermarket parts, some say it was also to stop chop-shops. You could call a dealer and ask if one VIN's fender will fit on another VIN's car, but they'd want to take your name and number, and "call you back soon" (this was before cell phones) so crooks would be scared off. You could make your own holes but it would take lots of skill and time to do it right.

I pay extra to Safeco for original replacement parts coverage. I asked if that applied to glass. Nope. If there is aftermarket glass that reputedly meets the specs, that's what they'd pay for.

I'll take a aftermarket any time over a Toyota replacement! I drove my new 2020 once this winter and got a chip!
My 2006 with 14 Caadian winters was never marked !

I'm afraid the new Prime windshields are way too brittle. When I replace it will not be made by Toyota I'm afraid!
