    Hello,
This is my first post here and I’m new to the Prius world so pardon my lack of knowledge about the Prius V. I know a fair amount about vehicles and I do a lot of work myself. That said, I am learning that the Prius V is a bit quirky. I’m the kind of person that can tell when a tire is low on air by how the car drives or is not running right before a check engine light comes on. Unfortunately, this makes owning a Prius with it’s odd noises a little stressful because the noises it makes would indicate problems in a non-hybrid.
I purchased a 2014 Prius V III a few months ago. Given that I bought it in the dead of winter and the temperatures were in the single digits or below, I ignored weird noises because that kind of weather makes even a brand new car sound like it’s on it’s death bed. So, now that the weather is slowly warming in Vermont, I’m now paying more attention to the quirky noises.
Like all cars I’ve owned, I immediately change the oil myself using Mobil 1 0w20, changed all the filters, and got an alignment after installing Toyo Celsius four season tires. I also installed LED headlights, along with changing most incandescent bulbs to LED. This alone made a huge difference at night and I highly recommend doing this! So, on the a few questions.
    1) When the car is running with the ICE off, there is a noise that sounds like the water pump running. To me, it sounds like the bearings are bad in a water pump. By this I mean a grumbling noise when it engages and runs. It goes on and off and I assume it’s the water pump circulating hot water to the heater core. Are my observations normal for a Prius?
    2) When in EV mode, I notice that a pump seems to run when I hit the brakes or slow down. My assumption is that this is the brake booster pump. I’m right about this?
    3) After changing the oil, I’ve occasionally noticed that there is some white creamy “sludge” under the oil cap and on the dip stick. This is occasional only and it usually indicates moisture in the oil. Oil level is consistent and coolant level is also consistent thus far. My guess is that in cold nice person Vermont that the weather is causing this. My thought is the ICE goes on and off not allowing the oil to heat up enough to burn off the moisture due to the cold humid weather. I’m I way off track here?
    4) Also, the rear driver’s side door window appears to by off track. Just noticed this but it’s probably been there all along. Haven’t opened that window due to ice/snow/bitter cold.
    5) I’m running 33psi in the front and 32psi in the rear on the stock 17” wheels. I located the psi for the 17” weeks on the internet as the door placard only shows the 16” wheel psi setting. Don’t know why Toyota did this when the vehicle was delivered with 17” wheels. That said, I’ve been experimenting with PSI while doing some “hyper-milieing.” Anyone else know about the PSI discrepancy on the door placard?
For now that’s what I’ve noticed. I appreciate any input y’all have along with anything I didn’t mention. I’m also open to any advise on maintenance as I love working on cars.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    congrats and welcome!

    1) sounds like the electric brake actuator. do you hear it when first opening the driver door?

    2) yes, same thing. or #1 could be another electric pump, there are several.

    3) how many miles on her? the ice has to warm up to operating temp, and maintains that even through on and off, so i don't think that is the cause.

    4) you'll probably have to pull the door panel to see what is going on

    5) many of us run 42f/40r. in any case i would up the pressure a little at a time and watch handling, braking, ride comfort and mpg.

    6) all the best!(y)

I believe your v3 would have come with 16" tires instead of 17". The v5 came with 17". Some years of these cars had a water pump recall so you might want to check into that issue. The creamy sludge is a bit concerning since, as Bisco said above, the car maintains engine temperature for emissions and interior heat reasons.

    Thanks for the reply!
    1) no but I think I isolated the noise and it's the fan on the radiator...most likely a bad bearing. Still working so not a huge deal.
    2) Your most likely right.
3)She has 80k. The white only appears when there are cold temperature swings like 25 during the day and negative at night .not happening now since we are in the 40's .
    4) Yeah, I'll be pulling the door apart soon. Will do new speakers while I'm at it.
    5) I keep my tires a little above in the winter and during the summer. Can't go to high here because the roads are so rough.

Definitely not a VT but it does have 17" on it. Maybe it's a v3.5 Same rims as a VT though.
The oil thing only happens in very cold weather .Think it may have to do with temp swings from negative to just below freezing. However, I will be keeping an eye on it. I check every other day. No issues the past month.

    Thanks!
