There is nothing behind it that I can see. I just went out and looked a little bit closer. Can you see the button you are talking about in the picture? I can't find a button under the wheel. I only see the tilt lever and the slot for the key. If I were to hookup the battery and NOT put the key in the slot and press the power button, wouldn't that tell me if I have SKS or not? If the car lights up without a key in the slot then I would know? I'm assuming I don't have SKS due to the smaller battery and battery holder. And that link you sent me for the battery and holder, is that a Toyota dealership right? Do you think I could print that and go to my dealer and get the battery for that price? The battery on that link is less than any automotive store, and it's a genuine Toyota 84 month battery.

That small battery seems non-existent other than at Toyota. I'm going to do what @Skibob suggested and just get the bigger battery holder, especially since I have a good battery at the moment. For now since I'm not driving it around, I'll just hook the battery up tomorrow without the holder because it fits fine that way.

If there were a button you would see it. You can push it if your sitting in the car so it’s not there. You are correct about the key thing. If you don’t have SKS you have to put the key in the slot to start the car, with SKS you could keep the key in your pocket and start the car. I use that site to get the low price from a Toyota dealer closer to my house. They consider it close enough to price match. If I tired to use a price from a dealer near you they would not match it. How many Toyota dealers are around you? Do an internet search for Toyota dealer internet pricing near you and see what shows up. One thing I do know is that wouldn’t work in Hawaii. Every dealer there is owned by the same guy.

I have two Toyota dealers near me. Ready for the entertainment @rjparker? I bought a Town and Country from one of the Toyota dealerships. They insisted that every little thing be fixed. They said the van needed a sensor for the transmission and they ordered it. I drove the van for a week with no problems at all. Took it back to Toyota to have the sensor put in. After the sensor was in, the next morning the van wouldn't go in reverse for a long time. Then it banged into drive. I drove it to two transmission shops for written quotes. They both said that Toyota used Toyota transmission fluid in a Chrysler van that requires special Chrysler fluid. I returned the van to Toyota. They denied using Toyota fluid despite both tranny shops written documents. They said they'd pull it in and "look" at it. I watched through the window as they pulled it in, did not raise it or pop the hood but simply walked away for 10 minutes, and then they pulled back out front and said, "It's not Toyota fluid in there". I told them they didn't even look at it and I got upset, took the paperwork from Toyota saying they checked it, and I walked out while carrying my baby daughter. The service man said that I was stealing their paperwork. I said it was paperwork on my van so it was coming with me. The Toyota mechanic ran to me, yanked me back by my jacket hood and my daughter fell on the concrete and so did I. Luckily she was not killed from her head hitting the concrete and I called the police. The Toyota service mechanic was arrested and the police looked at the Toyota paper and said that the paper definitely was mine to keep. The service manager called and apologized for the incident. I decided not to take further action against Toyota in exchange for them fixing the transmission that they ruined on a van that I had owned for less than a week. But after the guy was released from jail, Toyota decided to change their mind and not fix the transmission. I had never taken anybody to court in my life, but this pissed me off. I took Toyota AND the mechanic to court. The mechanic did not show up because he was again in jail for an unrelated issue. It took less than five minutes to be in court, and I thought it would take about an hour. The judge asked me which transmission shop I preferred and I picked and the judge ruled that Toyota was liable for a new transmission for my van and that Toyota was not allowed to fix it themselves because they were not honest with me. So Toyota had to do what was right, and they had to pay court fees. Ever since, I've gone to the Toyota dealership that is further away from my house and they are extremely pleasant to deal with. So, even though there are two dealerships in my area, I will only go to one.

Interesting story. There is always one slime ball dealer in the area. And its usually the biggest one run by a tycoon. Those guys push their employees using fear and intimination for more profit per customer interaction.

    Just try to remember:

    • ACC: Power button once, no foot on brake.
    • ON: Power button twice, no foot on brake.
    • READY: Power button with foot on brake.

Really, the information you're calling contradictory about the battery has been covered for you pretty well in these threads so far. You've read that one bar on the dash should be plenty to crank the engine, and you've also read there is a protective cutout on cranking at around 20%. And you've also read that the dash bar graph only covers the range from about 40 to 80 percent, so yes, one bar on that bar graph is well above 20 percent.

On the other hand, reading that the car has a protective action at 20% is not the same as reading that the battery can't get below 20%. Of course it can. (If it weren't possible, there'd be no need for a protective action!)

At a certain threshold level, the car will stop letting you do things to actively discharge the battery further. But batteries have a certain self-discharge rate, and that will continue while the battery sits.

Yeah this happened about 10 years ago when I still owned a computer business and I wasn't into buying or selling cars. The other Toyota dealer has been MORE than kind to me. I never told the good Toyota dealership about this, but maybe they were notified by the bad Toyota dealership, because whenever I have a Toyota problem, they jump right up and make it right. Most dealerships are stealerships especially in Fort Wayne, but some are better than others. The Toyota dealership I deal with has been amazing in helping me with parts, service, and even rentals. I had an 09 Camry that had the infamous oil consumption issue. Many people had a hard time getting this covered by Toyota. And the few that did get it covered had to pay labor and some even had to pay a portion of parts. I towed the Camry to them, 76K at that time, and they put in a new engine. I was even prepared to pay something, but when I went to the counter, they handed me the keys and told me to have a nice day. They are amazing. They also own a Lexus lot, Kia lot, and I think another lot as well, Subaru I think. All of them have great reputations. Maybe I should take my Prius there LOL!

Why does this issue keep coming up? I've stated so many times now that I know how to turn on the car to ACC and turn on the car to on, and I've also stated many times that I never once had put my foot anywhere near the brake pedal because I want the engine fixed first and filled with fluids before I ever push that brake pedal. I mentioned this before even buying the car and when I went to tow the car, I was able to get it in neutral without putting my foot on the brake. I don't want to start the engine. Now, I was a little confused about when the "ready" light would be on. I originally thought "ready" meant that it was ready for me to put my foot on the brake and hit the power button to start the engine. Now I understand that if it says "ready", the gas engine could start at anytime and obviously I don't want that right now.

And I've discussed already, the contradictory information about the HV battery and that issue should have died already as well. When one person says a Prius HV battery doesn't go below 20% so that is why you don't see many people needing to buy a special charger, and another says you can start a Prius with one bar, and multiple other people say that if the battery has been sitting, it's probably completely dead and unable to start the car. That information is contradictory not by my action. It's either one or the other. My opinion after reading multiple posts about this is that it all comes down to luck. Some will start and others will not. I'm sure it depends on battery condition before it was even sitting, how long it sat for, what was the charge before it sat, does it have 5%, 10%, 20%, 25%. I'm hoping to find out tomorrow with the new 12V installed because I will run all the diagnostics on the battery.

You can also rebend the existing battery holder to fit the bigger battery if you wanted to save a buck. Put it in a vice or use a set of vice grips.

Also, if you have water in there, that means you have a water leak. Likely near the roofline upper right corner of the hatch where two panels overlap. Should probably take care of that. Also maybwant to check the connector by the HV fan bracket. It can become corroded from the leak. And while you are in there you could clean the HV fan if you haven't done so already.

Do you have a copy of the owners manual? If not you can get it on line. It explains about how the start button works in there. The reason Chapman mentioned it was you said press twice to get to ACC just a post or two before that. You press once with your foot off the brake for ACC. That runs the radio. Pressing twice with your foot off the brake turns every electric thing on. The blower fan, electric windows, computers all go on. It’s like turning the ignition to run without hitting the starter in a normal car. If you push the button with your foot on the brake and the ready light comes on that means the car is READY TO DRIVE. Engine running or not. Kind of like if you have a car with a manual transmission you have push the clutch in to start it.

It came up again because you had just written (in the part I quoted)

which was incorrect (ACC is power switch once; power switch twice is not ACC). So it appeared, at least at one point, that your haste to say you were getting it was not helping you really get it. Then again, it can happen that somebody really does get something, but just misstates it in one post or another when writing quickly. I don't know you so it's hard to tell which thing happened.

The thing is, it's not just about whether you've got it yet or not, because a great feature of PriusChat is that posts stay around, and other people will read them. So if something is misstated in a PriusChat post and it's left uncorrected, that makes things more confusing for other people later.

You already have the information in this thread that you need for understanding that some people talk of numeric charge percentages and others about bars on the dash graph, and how the dash graph is only a window over a small region of the percent charge range, and how a limit on operation allowed by an ECU is different from some sort of magical guarantee that a discharging battery will never fall below a certain point. Whether you'll see how those facts relate to each other and are useful to you, or will continue to insist they're contradictory, kind of is up to you.

Here you are talking good sense. Powering up the computers and finding out what you're dealing will be more useful than a whole lot of speculation and prediction. That isn't because it's all "luck" or the information you've been given is useless, but because (as you've realized), the way that all plays out in your car depends on so many specifics about your car and your situation that nobody has until you dig in.

One other thing I didn’t mention. If you have a charger that can put out 2 or 3 amps keep it connected to the battery while you are doing all your testing. Those batteries go dead pretty fast.

Yes I have a charger with a 2 amp option. I will hook it up to it. Thank you.

I have an owners manual. I understand how to start the car, just mistyped it. I know that I need to press twice to get all the electronics to run. I did that when I put the car in neutral for towing purposes. ACC to me means "accessories" which means all electrical components. I know I am probably wrong on what it means since ACC only runs the radio, but I do know how to turn on the electrical systems in the car.

Mechanic that was supposed to show up at noon, texted me at 11:40 asking if he could come tomorrow. So it's been delayed another day.

I have a huge personal favor to ask all of you on here. This is not Prius related but it's important to me. I'm not really into Facebook and I am a single dad to two children so I don't get to go out and I don't have hardly any friends. My ex left me for another guy who brainwashed her into leaving me. My daughter was only 4 months old at the time and my ex left her with me and started a new life with the new guy. My ex has been out of the picture for most of her life. My daughter has always thought the world of me. But now that my daughter is old enough to basically care for herself, my ex is back in the picture to be her best friend. Now, my ex and the guy that brainwashed my ex, are brainwashing my daughter. My daughter, who is 11 and has never said a bad thing about me to me, has been really crappy this week while on Spring Break at her mom's house. She is rude on the phone with me and she acts like I am bothering her when I call to check on her and see how she is doing. Last night after a week of this attitude, I told her I was hanging up because of her behavior. She then started texting me all these mean comments. She wants to move in with her mom that she hardly knows. And my ex sent me an email saying that she is old enough to pick where she wants to live and in my crazy state, the judges do listen to the kids before the allowed age to pick which is 14. My ex just wants to get out of paying child support and I know if my daughter goes there to live, she will regret it. But once she makes her choice, she can't turn back. I am REALLY hurt by this because I've spent my life making sure my daughter has the best life. And now she has a new "buddy" in her mom and wants to go live with her. I really thought it was a joke at first and I can't believe my daughter is being so mean to me. I feel like I have already lost her. Can't eat. Can't sleep at all. I'm hurt in every way possible. My daughter means the world to me. For all those that believe in the power of prayer, could you please say a word for me and my daughter? I am absolutely heartbroken. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the kinds words and prayers everybody. My daughter did text me quite a bit last night. Seems she misses me and she apologized. But that doesn't mean everything is ok. She comes home tonight and we will have a sit down conversation to hopefully work everything out.

The mechanic that was supposed to come over yesterday canceled and changed it to today at noon. It is now 12:28. He is not here. He sent me a message yesterday saying if my Town and Country needed an engine oil pan gasket, he would fix that for $60 and there is a sensor that needs replaced and he said he would do that for free. I told him I'd pay for both. Then I got another odd text from him saying, I need $40 tomorrow. I live in a hotel with my son and if I don't get $40 by tomorrow we will be on the streets again. Yikes. So this guy seems like he isn't going to work out. I know many mechanics but not many of them will come to my house. So I'll call around tomorrow and if I can't find someone that will come to me, then I will tow the Prius to the mechanic that I use the most. So frustrating. It is sad about the mechanic and his baby son. I pulled $80 out of the ATM today and figured if he ended up doing more work, I'd drive back to the ATM and get more. So he was guaranteed $80 to help his situation today, and he didn't even show up. I feel sorry for the baby son.

i don't understand how a decent mechanic can be out of work these days, but maybe he has no one to care for his son.

I put an ad on Facebook in a car group that I am a member of. I have a main mechanic that I use but he has a shop. I really don't want to pay to tow the Prius to the shop. I also have a van that has a huge oil leak as well and I don't want to have to tow it to the shop either. So I've had multiple people on Facebook shoot me prices for fixing the van at my house. I obviously don't know what is wrong with the Prius but I do know what's wrong with the van, so I asked people to quote me for that job. The mechanic living in a hotel wanted $60. Cheapest I can get on Facebook so far is $100. So, I'm hoping more mechanics put prices on my ad in the morning so I can get this work done. Tomorrow I am planning to diagnose the Prius with the battery in it. My daughter is home for those that have been reading. She seems fine and is happy with me and she admitted that her mom and step dad are putting extreme brainwashing pressure on her. So while she is okay now, I am not sure that this is over. But I feel better now and work will resume tomorrow. Updates coming soon!

I got the 12V battery installed today. I setup my new Bluetooth OBDII Adapter and linked it to my phone. I ran Dr. Prius. Torque Pro, Hybrid Assistant, and ToyoSys. I have never ran any of these apps before and don't know ANYTHING about these apps. I am used to just using my Actron OBDII plug-in scanner. Is Dr. Prius just an app for the hybrid battery? Actually most of these apps seem to be just for the hybrid battery unless there is something that I'm not seeing. Actually the ToyoSys app seemed to do the most, but there are no codes that come up on any of the scans. Most likely this is caused by the new 12V battery, but I was hoping that some of the computers would have codes. I had a mechanic come over today that is a mobile mechanic. There isn't one drop of oil on my driveway under the Prius, but I told him that there was a lot of oil on the flatbed tow truck right under the engine before unloading it. My guess is that the Prius is now totally empty. The mechanic saw some buildup around the oil pan, but I told him there has to be a big leak somewhere either from the oil filter, oil lug nut, or a problem with the engine. This guy didn't seem to know anything so I decided it would be best to not let him touch it. Here are some screenshots from my phone from various apps that I used on my phone. It seems at least one cell is way too low and probably bad on the hybrid battery, but you guys will be able to tell me more about this HV battery than I can figure out. Does it have enough power to start the car once the engine is fixed and filled with fluid, or is the battery too low or bad? Cell #11 bad?
