I try to do mine close to the end of each quarter (March, June, September, December). The car's not free until midweek next week, though, so I'll charge it then.

New tires going on it Monday.

With all the nice Spring weather here in the North East, I'm thinking about swapping back to the summers some time this week. What are your car's new shoes planned for Monday?

I'm switching from the Pirelli Cinturato P/7 A/S Plus to the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT. The Pirellis were good but are already thin after only 42k miles. I'm getting almost $41 per tire back on the mileage warranty and there's a $60 rebate on the Ascend GT. Yokohama doesn't really address the LRR status of the Ascend GT. It's a newer version of the Avid Ascend with a different tread pattern and updated rubber compound. With that in mind I really don't expect it to be much more than a 1-3 mpg hit in exchange for a more comfortable and less noisy ride. We have multiple multi-state trips coming up and the Avid Ascend has been very good on my wife"s Yaris. That car doesn't spend any time on the open desert highway in severe heat like the Prius does, though, so this is an experiment as much as anything.

If you don't mind, I'll piggyback my "shortie charge" numbers next week on this thread so both experiences stay together for others to read.

Ah, Pirelli! Remember their calendar? They were a very important part of my teen-age years as I was growing up back in the UK! I used to pump gas at my old Dad's mate's filling station as a teen, and spent many an idle hour gazing at Pirelli's wall art, in fact I remember several TV documentaries on exactly how those famous (now quite valuable) calendars were photographed and the 12 shots were chosen (from several thousand if my memory serves me well, and remember that was back in the pre-digital days of Kodachrome 25 and 64 and Ektachrome!) That beautiful art was made back in the days before everyone had cameras in their phones, and a good photographer was far more valuable to a publication than a good photo editor! o_O  ;)

I think you're dead right on that. In fact I was thinking along the same lines myself, but checking the previous logs I found that there was a slight increase in the last few hours, hitting the magical 250V, and I was sort of hoping that might happen this time; but I may cut down on the soakers for the next one at the end of June. OK, so perhaps I might have a couple of cells starting to get flakey (after all, the battery is 10 years old) , but I just did a quick run around town for errands, and noticed the SoC spent quite a while at 75%+ :), but time will tell!

I've seen some benefit when I've long soaked mine but now I think doing it very often would invoke the law of diminishing returns. Initially my car obviously needed it but to do it more than once a year might be applying too much heat on a cell too often, making it worse. I plan on saving anything over 24 hours for one or two of the December full service charges unless my numbers change drastically in June or September. No use further damaging a weakened cell by spending an extra 12 or 18 hours trying to cram 1 more volt into it.

    Agree;).

Your getting back closer to what the directions state then;).

I’ll be doing ours at Easter or potentially sooner depending on when the Prime is ready(y)

Started my "shortie" this morning. I need the car to go over Cajon Pass for lunch tomorrow and figure I'll be done by breakfast so it will have, at worst, 3 hours of resting time before I start the car. We've heard the rather expensive testimony of the person ;) who didn't give the cells long enough to rest before starting the car. I'd hate to destroy the battery, wasting all the progress and time spent maintaining the cells for the last two years.

Imeant to respond to this earlier and forgot.

I was not familiar with the Pirelli calendars back then. I was too busy gazing at the Playboy calendars hanging up in my neighbor's garage.:whistle::D

I think the Pirelli calendars were only available to UK. Here's what wiki says re. the Cal:

After an unpublished mockup in 1963, the Cal has become an annual publication since 1964.

The Cal has been created by the British art director Derek Forsyth and is known for its limited availability, as it is only given as a corporate gift to a restricted number of Pirelli customers and celebrities.

Publication was discontinued after the 1974 issue as an economizing cutback in response to the world recession from the oil shock. It was resurrected 10 years later and has been published regularly since then.

…and getting back on topic, I changed to summer-wheels yesterday. Oh, my goodness, these are whisper quiet compared to the studded snows, but who the hell drives with the winders down in the winter anyway? …an' when Jack Frost is about, I close the winders and turn the radio up to eleven! Even though we didn't get an enormous amount of snow this winter, the fact that I was out in some pretty slick conditions mostly before the ploughs/sanders had a chance to make much headway, made me glad I'd invested in the studs.
