Bleeding/Purging Prius 2010 Trim IV

    Hello All,

    My prius hit a 210,000 mile mark. I've always changed my oil at around 3000-500 miles. 7 months ago I put in a junkyard hybrid battery from a 2012 prius. I recently had some work done on the vehicle. The work done recently (3 weeks ago) was a water pump change and also a engine coolant flush. I also had blue devil sealer put in because I had random misfires (p0301, p0303) and coolant(white smoke) coming out of the exhaust. I changed all the ignitions coils/boots with new ones. No more misfires and the car runs fine.

    Now the current issue is sloshing/splashing/water(coolant) sound behind my dashboard. My hybrid battery fan is working overtime on my 30mile work commutes, also the heater does not work. I think there is air in the coolant system. The reason being is when I tried bleeding the prius in maintenance mode (my uneducated failed attempt) It just sat there and the coolant boiled. The steps I took was maintenance mode; IG-ON, squeezed the tube connected to the coolant reservoir and it looked like it filled the coolant more. It was like coolant was being pushed up. Can someone please update this thread with the exact steps to the dot on how to bleed a 2010 prius. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Update: I had the engine rebuilt and the engine sounds much better I haven’t tested it too much so far. Planning on using for my commute tomorrow. When I drive it home earlier the heater wasn’t working much and the coolant temp light came on for 3 minutes then turned off as I was driving on the freeway.

    This thread has been up for weeks and no replies. This really sucks. Currently about $2200 in repairs/parts.

    Hope it works for you. That's a big investment. Did you get the new piston rings installed during the rebuild?

    $2200 is cheap for a rebuild. It is hard to say what your issue is. If Blue Devil was added to the system without blocking off the heater core circuit, there may be a clog somewhere in the system. This is the main reason why we always advise against using stop leak products.

    At this point you can try pressure flushing the system (i.e. Gates powerclean tool) and try re-bleeding the system again.

    Also, has the EGR circuit and intake manifold been checked out?

    This is exactly what happens when you pour in some stop leak in the coolant system. This will clog the heater core and you will hear the coolant boil because the waterpump is also clogged.

    The end result will have the car completely shut down on you.
    No temperature warning at all.
