    Current examples are Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet and just a few others.

    McCartney was arrested on marijuana charges there, many years ago. they don't take kindly to outsiders flaunting their laws, even well known wealthy individuals.

    that being said, i'm still wondering if these charges aren't 'trumped' up.

    I'm actually kind of surprised how quickly public opinion turned on him. He clearly wasn't considered a saint, but he was largely credited for saving Nissan through the 1999 Renault deal (enough that he had a manga written about him). Also, his (reported) executive pay was typically half that of the American auto CEOs (example).

    I am sure there are still many supporters of him but not the majority, I don't think. He was very popular public figure appearing in many TV shows and even on kids educational program on NHK. That said, I think nowadays, Japanese public in general are very cynical and even cruel to corporate top who "cheat". I am sure media played a big role in promoting the dirty images, some eve with "fake news", but they are just not as accepting of rich person cheating especially if not one of their own kind refusing to accept the charge with a grace.

    To be fair, I can understand how his compensation package looked lavish (as detailed in the Bloomberg article) since his peers (notable example) had much more modest comp packages. But then I suppose the number doesn't seem so high from an American perspective given our averages, despite the debate over executive comp here (anyone who's picked up HBR in the past ~decade has seen the articles).
